Epic Games released the latest version of UDK for December 2011 a few weeks ago.

The December 2011 beta includes a new texture paint system which allows you to paint textures on static meshes interactively in the level viewport, a landscape LOD system and a few improvements to it's existing features.

where is the difference to the regular old mesh painting feature? been wondering for a week now..

the difference is that you can draw directly like you did with zbruh or other similar software. UDK will automatically create a special map for this if i don't mistake.
