Selecting through objects in MODO

I am a new Modo user (Been using Maya for years) and I can't seem to find a way to select through objects in Modo. It will only select the objects/components that are not obscured by anything. While I can see a place for this, I would still like to, say, select the vertices on both sides of an object in one swipe. Is there a way to do this?

I highly recommend transfusing over to a tablet for modo - I hated using one for Max + Maya but its so damn smooth in modo. Will take you a week or so to get used to it but well worth the effort.

So I actually still have this issue. If i middle click and drag with my mouse, it selects through just fine. But since I am on a cintique I am using a pen. The pen button I have set to middle click doesn't select anything when I click and drag.

I think I understand what was happening. In modo you have to drag the select marquee to cover the whole face before selecting it, unlike Maya, where you only have to select a portion of the face to select it. I don't know if this seems better for my workflow, but I guess I have to just accept it for now.

You can switch this up in the preferences.

System > Preferences > Selection > Partial Polygon Selection

Secondly if your coming from maya check out...

System > Preferences > Remapping > Mouse Input Presets Maya (Navigation only)

Navigation only is best, really helped me with the switch over.

Ah thanks for that! As for the maya navigation, I am actually using Vaughan Smith's navigation script which from what I gather does something the same or similar as that option.

Okay, so i am still having problems with this. Now it only selects a polygon if I select the edge it is connected too. Here are my selection settings.

Good luck - feel free to give me a shout if you got stuck on anything. Modo isnt not as popular as it should be so not so many people around to bug about things when you get stuck.

Yea it does that with edges - no idea why! But

Use convert selections - frigging awesome btw - select anything, a poly for example, hold down alt and then hit another selection type... vert, edge or ALT + 1,2,3 etc etc - maybe not so useful for this but general all round useful.

Another thing to try for selections is rather then "tapping" each edge as you would with maya make selections more like painting brush strokes in photoshop. Hold your pen down and brush across your model for quick selections. I love this!!

All selections, tool options and snapping tools are exactly the same in your UV window as your 3D view port. Also speeds things up a lot!

So I have to select a polygon face by selecting its edges and converting to polygons and not just by dragging the marquee over the polygon itself?

Ohh no no - of course you can select a poly with your poly tool like any other program. I'm just saying you can convert any selection into any other selection by holding the Alt Key!

I think it modo also remembers what you had selected in each selection type.. so select some verts, switch over to poly make some selections then switch back to verts... it should still have the same verts selected from earlier.

Your best bet is the "brush" style selections with your edge issue.

Okay i can work around it, but it would be really cool if i could drag select polygon faces through an object, while partialy selecting said polygon faces.

Maybe try on your mouse? it might be an issue with your tablet setup. I remember it being a bit of a pain when i was setting up mine. Make sure that middle click is not set up correctly and not set to mouse 3 or something.

"Debug" it with your mouse. Right click marquee should select front facing faces wile middle click should select front and back.

I checked with the people on the foundry and so far it seems that Modo just selects face differently. Not that big a deal I guess, I just wanted to be sure.
