How to make those details

Hey guys, I'm sure that I'm not the only one who want to know how to make those handgun details.

The big question is he only texturise it or he did it in zbrush or 3ds max ?

This is the Picture of the gun and I putted the detail in the red Square line.

Use a tiled custom texture as a noise modifier on a masked area in zbrush? That is how I think I'd do it. As with all things in art there are a thousand ways to achieve the same result.

This stuff can be easily added with something like NDo, and it would be just a waste of time to model them out, if its not hardly requested, and if you have access to the needed tool.

Create an alpha, mask area in zbrush, drag rectangle.

Or make a pattern with white color in photoshop and convert it with ndo to a normalmap.
Then position it with overlay to your uv shell.

You could even model the pattern and wrap it onto the grip!
But I wouldn´t do that : P

Tobbo, how would you apply that technique to a custom shaped grip?

Your selection for the pattern to be applied to would probably be different, but the pattern is still modeled the same way.

I'm not saying it's better to go this way over using nDo. I'm just trying to offer an alternative method.

You can chamfer all the verts on an even quad mesh to get a diamond pattern.

This is called knurling by the way, and that vert-chamfering method is the way to do it if you need a hi-res for baking. If it's going to be on an asset that's not so close to the camera, you can probably get away with a texture and some crazybump.

Zbrush tiling surface noise is the quickest way probably.

Make a map like this (you can have this one, but this was done <60 sec in photoshop, so I didn't pay a lot of attention to the spacing. To make your own, just use the diamond pattern gradient tool in photohoshop and arrange the diamonds into the correct tiling pattern.

Then all you have to do is

- make sure you have Uv's on the handle (or if the handle is fairly flat you can use the 3d method for a projection instead).

- Mask out the shape on the handle where you want the detail

- Apply as surface noise, and tile it to get the size of detail you want.

Super simple, this example took me about 3 or 4 minutes to do. Not the most amazing but with a little more time and attention it would look perfect for whatever you want to do.
