Too much cavity? I don't really see that I didn't actually do a cavity map or anything to do with cavity. Can you show exactly where you mean? The contrast is up a bit on post maybe that's it? Edge wear I can see that. The edge wear is added in the material so easy to lower or I could maybe make it a bit greyer aswel. I try that cheers
have you used a reference image for it?
the main thing about it is it looks really soft and blobby looking.
what brushes are you using? try using brushes like trim smooth borders with a rock alpha(you can find it in the lightbox)
adding some surface noise can help as well. Also your texture seems a bit flat try adding some variation and a bit more depth

Good start though keep going
Wish I did have access to that tool, it looks amazing However I'm using mudbox at the moment and haven't been able to find a similar brush.
Hey guys, there is a method in Zbrush where you use clay polish and it'll mask out the edges, where then you can create a kind of cavity map to get nice crisp edges on rock, does anyone know where I can find a tutorial for this? Can't seem to get this method down, and I've I lost where I had seen this before, any help is appreciated!

You can create a cavity mask without having to use clay polish. Just fiddle with the "mask by cavity" settings under the masking tool and you should find what your looking for. It will mask even the smallest details.

Just in case you missed it: After using clay polish, there is a mask applied, that for some reason is hidden by default. So you have to unhide the mask after clay polishing by strg+h.
But I don´t know, which technique you´d use then, most likely some tools from the tools>deformation palette, I´d try deflate or polish crisp edges
I made a game recently for Ludum Dare where you play as moss and just grow moss on rocks. Although the rocks are dirt simple and not impressive at all, Montreseur's rock made me think of it and I thought you all might enjoy it. I might expand the concept eventually(moss on dirt, moss on wood) and model some actual decent looking rocks, but here it is in the meantime!

Found the thread I was looking for, and thanks for your help guys! The method is getting the edges highlighted white and baking it out with polypaint, so you can just screen it and tweak it in photoshop, thanks!
There is so MANY great rocks here, well, if it is a thread for rock lovers I am sure there is a lot of nice people around to help me with rocks, ROCKS is my weakest point in 3D, I love them too, but cannot really make a good one, some of your works looks SO real . I am even like to contribute to get a video tutorials series. looking forward to get some kind PMs from rock lovers to help a kid-rock like me
How can i add more detail? Do you guys use alphas for that?
Hit it with a small size, 100 falloff, square alpha, trimsmoothborder. Chip the edges and pull the wear to the faces from there, also use the dam standard for cracks. Use the same setup with the trimsmoothborder to chip the cracks up as well.

That type of lava flow is called Pahoehoe!
Actually did this rock using Sculptris... So it's lacking some detail... next exercise will be in zbrush though
Hah awesome! You just made my research so much easier. Thanks!

I got bored and made a rawk type thing. Apologies for the low res image
1900 poly + 2048 texture
First crack at something rocky.
400 Polys
[EDIT]

Thanks for the crits!
ahh sorry I assumed for some reason it was Zbrush haha.
im not a big fan of mudbox for sculpting but at least it doesn't crash every ten minutes, I like it for painting though.
try out the scrape brush with the rotated cloud alpha stamp turned on and turn randomize on, should be able to get some good shapes with that
I´m also playing around with rock/cliff modeling, here is a quick sketch - it´s supposed to be a granite big wall (about 400m tall):

Couldn't get the viewer to work. Do you need a plugin installed or something?

I sculpted them in zbrush and textured them with substance painter
