Quick Question

Hey everyone,
I'm trying to learn 3d modeling and I'm kind of confused. Looking through the forums it seems like a lot of people are using zbrush for modeling and then transferring to maya? I'm a broke college kid so I can't afford zbrush and I'm instead using the student version of maya and I'm wondering if I need to learn zbrush or can I do everything in Maya?

You can do still pretty cool models in Maya. It will just be more difficult to do one thing over the other.

You don't have to limit yourself to just Zbrush. You can also use Mudbox (student is free).

There's also Sculptris which is free as well.

@Brian Oh wow that thread is awesome! Do you know of any tutorials(free preferably) that teach how to model things in the handpainted style?

Handpainted should literally be translated to just painting. If you can paint, you've learned how to handpaint a model.

I condone pirating software if you can legit not afford it. When you develop skills from the software and are able to get a job and afford it, you will buy a legit license. Go download zbrush from a torrent and start learning.

Sculptris is a fantastic free alternative to Zbrush.
Especially if you are just starting to learn 3D, you are probably far beyond needing all the bells and whistles of anything else.

edit: Didn't realise Mudbox was free for students, even better for starting out.

You could also get Modo indie, its pretty sheep and it has everything you need to get startd, modeling, sculpting and texturing tools all inside the program, so no need of photoshop or zbrush
