Help with Beatrix Save the Queen!

I working a HD model of Beatrix from FF9. The shots I have planned will show off the detail in the character and her weapon. The question I have is how to go about modeling the ornamental part of the hilt. I using 3DS Max for basic shapes and Zbrush for sculpting. I have the part in question circled in red below.

Rough sculpt so you can conceptually figure out what's going on, using Dynamesh to get more quads as needed.

Once you're where you want to be, retopologize for a clean mesh. Crease the edges you want, or add control loops in another program. Mak sure there are clean quads.

I would just subd model that, it's not organic enough to warrant starting with a sculpt in my opinion but if you wanted to zbrush it then I would use shadowbox to get the shape before you do anything.

Also if you're going to model it in zbrush then model it in pieces

how long would it take you to do that in a clean manner?

feels like an insane waste of time to do such a shape in zbrush

i don't get what there is to figure out. everything is on that concept it would take possibly 10 min to model this

The problem I have is the loop design on the hilt. I was not sure how to go about starting it. Not sure what techniques in 3ds max would help.

build the base shape, which is basically a squashed hemisphere, set up imageplanes from front and side and then retopo those lines on top of your squashed hemisphere

I tried using a hemisphere in zbrush masking out the shape and extruding it. Just that I was not getting the result I wanted.

well i am saying, don't use zbrush

to me its a waste of time, but i would really like to know how the zbrushers here would do it and how fast and clean the result will be

I have my sphere set up and get to the part to draw the points. When I draw the points the sphere reappears and the points are being drawn on the sphere and not creating the polys. I am following your tutorial. Am I missing a step?
