Hey this is a Keg I am creating for for my pirate ship environment. This is a sculpt I created in zbrush after exporting the low poly version from maya.

Since this is my first official sculpt in zbrush, I wanted to get some feedback before I moved on to texturing it. Thanks

You should mix this reference with some realistic ones or concepts, it will be more believable.

And don't put so much noise in your HP, keep it clean. If you really need wood detail, generate a detail map from a photo and add it later in overlay on you baked normal map.

Your barrel construction is off. Your outer planks are just cutting horizontall. They're cylindrically wrapped around the barrel in the concept and real life.

Nice job wth the spigot. Did you want it faceted that way?

One one thing that hit me is that the saigot part is slightly angular as if you can still see where the horizontal line divisions where across the mesh before you sub divided and sculpted. This might because you subdivided it once with the smt toggled and then stared sculpting. Its the same with (but not some much with the barrel). I can see hard lines that make out the shape of the original low poly mesh. If you have time to go back, sub divide it so that you get a smoother rounded barrel and tap before you start sculpting. I also agree with JadeEyePanda. The planks all come in horizontally. If you look at your concept, the gaps between the planks all face inward to the centre. One method that might help is creating a cylinder in your 3d application. You have 18 planks in your concept so make it 18 sides or even 36 for good measure. Take only an 1/18th fraction of that cylinder and model one plank out of that fraction. Then copy and rotate round that plank 18 times using the barrels centre as your pivot point. That way all you planks are even and give you the correct spacing between them. You can do that part either in your 3d application or in z brush with each plank being a separate subtool.

Another minor thing is that the fibres and cuts (particulaly in the low half) are too fine and noisy. Make the cuts fewer and larger. add the finer fibres in with other maps.

Thank you all for the critique. What you guys said makes perfect sense. I will now revisit my low poly version and fix the issues and then send it back into zbrush.

Sorry I took so long on the updates. :poly136: I was having problems with the subtools master multi append. It kept crashing so I uploaded separate screenshots of the keg and stand.I created retaining edge loops so Im puzzled as to why there are problems with my rings and spout.:poly118:

This is a massive improvement. You have the wood grain and the construction down. I think you stand is still a bit too noisey. Try match the same grain you have for the barrel. I would also suggest you round those edges on the stand a bit more. They are way too sharp. Unless this is brand spanking new cut wood it shouldnt be 90 degrees. The fact that its suppose to be a pirate ship keg suggest that this would be aged.

the barrel binding doesn't make sense. Should be thicker, not intercepting the wood.

The metal bands need to be larger in order to rest on top of the wood. Also the wood color is off. It's too red and bold. Have a look back at you're concept but even more importantly look at some reference images of actual old kegs and barrel. This should give you some idea of the colours you should be aiming for. The wood as you have stated is noticeably repeated. What makes this stand out is the larger fibers in the center and the darker areas of the texture that form two lines down the middle. Blur your eyes at it and you'll see what i mean. Flip, rotate or invert some of the planks to break this up. If this is too obvious you might need to create variants.

Im having difficulties right now with the multimap exporter. My diffuse map keeps coming out as colors instead of looking like a texture map. Heres the mesh and heres the diffuse map that is creates from the exporter. Does anyone have a solution?

What are you trying to export? A normal map or Diffuse?

Because your cracks don't export out in your Diffuse/Albedo unless you painted those in.

Depth information gets baked and exported elsewhere.

its the diffuse. and i used an actual texture when i painted the mesh. when you say depth, you're talking about the normal map right? Here's the texture I used

Are you dropping subdivisions THEN exporting by any chance?

Yes I am. After I sculpt, I then use that texture and paint it onto my mesh. I lowered the subdivision to level 1 and then I proceeded to using the multi map exporter.

Export the texture first before you drop resolution on the mesh.

You drop mesh resolution, you drop texture resolution.

Im running into issues with the multi map exporter. Even though my diffuse is more detailed then last time, it still doesnt have the right amount of detailed as shown in zbrush. If anyone has a solution, It would be nice to hear it. Im starting to suspect Im not using the right settings. I export while my mesh is at the highest level subdivision. :poly127:

What is the resoltuion of the texture map you created in ZBrush?

The resolution is 2048. I even went back to my settings to double check. I decided to use xnormal to extract the maps. The ao and normal map looks alot better but the diffuse came out as a disaster so I will try again.
