Barbed wires - How to

Hi everybody,

I have never made a prop with barbed wires before. And surprisingly I couldn't fine a useful tutorial for a beginner like me. Except a few high poly tutorials that don't suit for video games.

I'm after such a thing:

Where I can manually move the wires where I want. But when I do, the UV is a mess. Any guidance is welcome. :poly121:

Thanks. But the problem is the UV as I said in the OP.

I'm for example making one by creating edges and this is how the texture then looks. (planar map atm)

If I finish making the planes that'd be a long thing to unwrap plus again I don't know how to UV and texture that kind of planes to have the texture look ok like in the image in the OP.

You need to unwrap the plane to be completely straight, I'm not sure about the Max unwrapping tool set so I can't really tell you how.

What I usually do is make a long straight strip with the desired subdivisions, uv that and then deform following a curve/spline which has the desired screw shape.

If you make the planes out of splines with "generate UV's" turned on you get great UV's that are straight. Set the spline to box, turn on render geometry, toss an edit poly on top of your stack and delete the extra polys.

if you're using maya, in the UV Editor, you can do a 'Polygons>Unitize' which should separate all your faces and scale the to the full 0-1 UV area. Then select all the UVs and do a 'Polygons>Move and Sew UV Edges' and it will map them all in a strip.

I'm using 3Ds MAX.

Basically this is what I have made so far.

And yes that goes straight into the trash.

Something like this looks so cool but I want to keep it much lower poly thats why I want to do it with planes and I need to wrap the wires around those circles they are connected to. But it's honestly my first time with wires and I need a really noob-ish explanation with almost a good result.
