3Ds Max crashing when skinning FBX imported from Maya

Hi guys, I've got an FBX mesh character exported from Maya. When I add a skin modifier and add bones it seems to crash. It's stable until you try to move a bone, then after around 2-3 seconds max crashes to desktop every time.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the mesh as I've skinned up a cube and that works fine.

I've tried exporting and reimporting as an obj, attaching to another editable poly and detaching etc, but still get the same problem.

Does anyone have a solution?
