3DS Max Vs. Blender: Which is better?

Which do you guys prefer?

I am very used to Blender but i wanted to go into 3DS Max because i have found that people create better items in 3DS than Blender.

Or could one of you guys show me someone who created something for dota 2 that looks cool?

Both are fine. As chiniara said, they're just tools. Pick one and learn it. You're not going to 'create better items' by using a specific software.

Currently I love Blender, except for it's lack of normals editing. Though I imagine that shouldn't be a big negative if you are working on character art/ stuff specifically for DOTA2. You probably have seen some pretty awesome art that was made using blender, lots of times nowadays I just think people won't post what they made something in unless they ended up doing a tutorial or were specifically asked about it.

Is this really a comparison? 3ds max costs 3.6k USD, whilst Blender is free. Moving to 3ds max will not make let you create better items than Blender would - that's all down to your skill and experience. In fact if you're used to Blender moving to 3ds max is going to be painful, as is the case when transitioning to any new 3d software.

Personally, I actually prefer Blender because I'm more used to the interface. I'd use Blender for retopo, UVing and rigging between the 2. I used to use 3ds max for promo shots and rendering though. Lots of game studios also use 3ds max for their work, so it'd be advantageous if you want to build a game studio focused portfolio.

The sword doesn't make the kingslayer.

That said, Autodesk is Industry standard and blender can definitely deliver compete, but it's all personal preference.

I've only started to warm up to maya, but I'm not going to switch my main software anytime soon unless I'm being forced to.
Blender is just what I'm comfortable with.

Industry standards are only here for a lot of reasons but those standards are very quickly coming down with the introduction of more third party tools.

If I get a job anywhere I'm going to use Blender every chance I can get.
OBJ and FBX importers and exporters can make it very flexible and I can run it off a flash drive because of how incredibly lightweight it is
52 mb Blender is far more preferable to 3 gig 3DSmax if you ask me.

One thing I really, really like about Blender over Max is that it starts in about a second, compared to about a minute and a half with Max. That's a minute and a half that I can spend doing things instead of making worthless posts on Polycount.
