Beginner rigging question

When creating 3d person character rig for unity using 3ds max, is it best to skin the characters gun to his hands, or should I be attaching the gun to his hands some other way?

    I imagine most systems would just be parenting the gun to the character's hand bones. And I believe this can also be done in Unity if you didn't want to do it in Max, might be better to do it in Unity so you can make adjustments based on any scripting that may be done.

    Most weapons have their own system of bones and the root bone gets snapped/aligned to a prob bone or the hand, by the engine. All weapons have the root bone in a similar location and that's how they get swapped out. I don't think anyone skins the weapon to the hand or links the weapons bone(s) to the hand unless it never leaves their hand.
