Speedy Unwrapping

Just curious if anybody knew about this interesting feature that Blender has. Would you say Blender's UV unwrapping rivals other suites? I don't use it very much because of Zbrush's nifty UV Master, but I might give it another try if I want to be precise and fast. Anyone know of any other awesome methods of unwrapping besides Blender/Zbrush?

I usually just use 3DS Max with the TexTools plugin (if the version of Max I'm using supports it.)

I'm pretty fast with it and it gives me a lot of control. A lot of friends of mine swear by Headus UV as well, but I've never tried it.

modo's default unwrapping tools are pretty awesome. The addition of ETEREA UV Tools in modo is also pretty handy.

3dsmax, point to poiint seams, break, relax.

select faces, quick peel.

I use default Max tools. Grab all faces, planar, select edge for seams that I want, break, relax, quick peel, or straighten faces as necessary. Then maybe hit re-scale button to unify texel density and pack normalize.

The newer unfold 3d does MAGIC!

It's better than modo or any other package such as uvlayout, umbrella, etc.

I use Maya,Zbrush,or Unfold 3d.Depends on the object.
Sometimes using maya while hotboxing in the uv editor is the fastest.
on more complicated geo,and when i dont have a lot of time i grab unfold 3d(amazing application for pelt mapping btw)so im in full control of my seams very fast,or zbrush plug.
Sometimes to speed things up i bash the mesh into Unfold3D,pelt where i want the seams to be,not looking at the facetension,bring it back in maya and finish it off there,since i need to texture it in Maya if its a non baked asset anyway..

Stock max editor for me with textools for minor functions like linear flatten,on some islands for better packimg. I might be a bit slower than others, but I have no problem unwrapping a 15k+ character in one working day if I get coffee first.

i use 3dcoat and a 3ds max/textools combo
i like 3d coat because you can unwrap while retopping, the packing is nice but basic
I`m still looking for a package that can pack uvs with certain conditions like do not rotate these uvshells, keep these uvshells together etc...

Been using Blender for uvmapping for years, I can do it in Maya too, but overall I've not seen a reason to move from Blender. Though I'd like better uv packing tools.

Deluxe UV with Maya works great. I also use unitize and then select all the edges I want sewn, leaving the seams unselected, and then hitting move/sew. Then unwrap in u or v, and that piece is done.

Skankerzero uses Headus with the "f" automatic flatten device and fine-tunes the resulting created UV map in 3dsmax with the chuggnuts UVtools.

I thought i was the only one who figured this out. Thanks for showing that my workflow was making sense.

peanut™: I was referring to the uv packing not the unfolding part of uving. From what I remember few years back when i used chuggnuts Uvtools once, there isn't really any specific UV packing tool.

Onion: Headus has got a nice function for packing UV's. Not sure about cuggnuts, but personally I just import my models back into headus after some smalls tweaks in my main program and then hit that big green button, sit back and relax.

3DFM: i see, never knew that Headus has that function. Back when I use max 2009, I rely on Textools, which has some of the best tools. Now most of the essential tools are incorporated in the new Edit UVW, pretty much eliminate the need to export into a external program. Peel with Seams is pretty much Roadkill.

No matter what Headus does, you're always going to be better off packing it yourself. Just my experience, anyway. There's always room for improvement in any automated system.

is 3-4hrs for a character unwrap supposed to be fast? i'd go crazy if unwrapping a single character would take me half a day.
I do it as ravenslayer, on the fly in 3dcoat while retopoing, then relax it in max, straighten and puzzle it. Should not be more than an hour - depending on the complexity of a character obviously.
However, another question. You have 2 faces on the bottom uv layout, they seem to have the same topology, why are the unwraps so different?
