VG Remix - Castle Crashers

Hello Everyone,

I am choosing Castle Crashers as my entry in this challenge. I know I want to try a hand painted style, but I am still trying to work out a style. I will update this thread with new progress. Time for a little reference and to choose a scene.

Initial block out of one of the knights. I'll be on later tonight to post up my reference. Need to try and play some CC tonight for some more reference.

Adding in a bit of reference. I am going to shoot for the volcano area where the skeleton knights are brought back to life by the necromancer. I definitely want to shoot for all 4 knights in the scene, each doing an attack or some magic. For the magic I am thinking of doing the ice and possibly the lightning. I also love that sign that first shows up when the player is walking up the volcano, so I might include that in there for the hell of it. As if the scene isn't cluttered enough, I love the tiny animal companions in the game as well, so I am thinking of adding them in, they would be small might not even be worth it, but we'll see how the scene starts to feel towards the end of the week.

Also I did a little more work on the knight model. Playing with proportions. Also started blocking out the scene very primitively, I will upload that tomorrow once I get some more blocking time with it.

Thanks @Tanka! I hope I can nail the fun feeling of this game.

Adding up some more in progress models. I started the skeleton knights model, as well as the solid lava people, I need to lower the poly count on these guys as they are considered environment technically. Hopefully more updates tonight. I am blocking out the scene I swear! Just not ready to show off just yet.

This is the first rough block out of the scene, I just wanted to place some pieces together and work on a silhouette of the actual platform the battle is going to occur on. One more shot of some of the individual model block outs as well. Back to work in the morning.

Started messing around with poses this morning. I woke up late so I didn't get much time to work on much. Hoping to bang out a lot of work this weekend, mainly sunday. I should have some updates tonight, I need to show some love to the textures and environment layout a bit more.

Blue (ice) knight casting ice pieces at enemies.

Heck yeah, this is going to look cool. Will you put fx in as well? Sword slashes and sparks and things?

Yes! That is the plan, I would like to add in all the magic effects, cartoony sword slashes and some of the lava effects too. Lots of fun things left on the checklist.

worked a little on texture and modeled the ram animal. Think the animals I am going to go with are ram, chicken, cardinal and giraffe. But anyway first block out of texture and first animal model below.

CASTLE CRASHERS!! Good choice

I would say your character model is off proportionally. In the game the head is the largest part of the body. Its longer than the body by almost double.

So, from your posts I'm assuming you're going to rig some models and then you've modelled some of them posed? I'm interested to know which you think is easier/better because I'm wondering which to do for my own diorama.

Quick characters update. I will be updated more today, just wanted to show off a little bit of the work.

@danielletaureau. I am using a combination, basically I have rigged up these models, I am doing a base pose with my simple rigs and then changing single verts as I see fit since they are so low poly its hard to pose them with just the rigs, some verts will follow bones incorrectly and lose shape.

UPDATE:
This weekend proved to be less productive than I wanted. I did get started on the necromancer model, the skeleton texture, better block out of the stage, rigged the knights and started blocking out magic effects. Some progress photos below. Next goals will be to finish up the skeleton texture, do the necromancer texture, rig all characters, and start/finish poses.

quick update, haven't spent much time on this for the past couple of days. Started some of the models for the animals and started the texture for the necromancer. Seriously need to start throwing this scene into sketchfab.
