Is there a name for the specific process of creating a set of textures on a power of 2 grid, so you can cut out sections on a plane and place them how you like in a 3D program? I'm trying to find tutorials on the Photo Shop specifics of this process but I'm not sure what to call it.

I don't think there's really a specific name for the process of creating modular texture sheets. If you're looking for a tutorial I'd check out 3dMotive's Modular Building tutorial. They go over that exact process. The texture you posted actually isn't a modular texture like you described, but rather a unique texture created for one of 3dMotive's other texturing tutorials.

Modular textures or trim sheets?

Ah maybe that's what I'm thinking of, not the modular type of sheet. A trim sheet, can you point me in the direction of some tutorials for that? I'm getting a bunch of sewing stuff in my trim sheet search.

Thanks Iv'e seen the modular one at 3D Motive before. It's that Sci Fi floor that's been bugging me. The tutorial starts with his floor already created from the trim sheet. Thanks for the reply's guys. Now I have a better idea what to look for.

Just so you know, that sci-fi floor isn't created from a trim sheet or modular texture. He did a high poly model and baked it to a uniquely unwrapped texture.

Yea that tutorial confuses me because I'm not completely sure what he did to lead up to his starting point. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Did he create a low poly, UV map it, explode it, duplicate it for high poly, create high poly from duplicate, reassemble (Tutorial starts around here) and then bake?

In the 3d motive example he creates a texture sheet first, runs it through a normal map filter or program like crazy bump, cuts up the grid texture, and creates modular low poly pieces from it.
