So here are some shots i feel better with now. with a little bit more character. and with better lighting i believe. i just thought i should share them.

here are some shots of an environment that i am working on for school.
I am trying to get a nice shot for my project. i wanted to get some advice on lighting and the angle of the shot itself if possible. thank you very much.

Yes I did. I am currently working on my portfolio and this is the first piece for it. it is supposed to be an abandoned oil storage warehouse in the middle of the amazon.

I am currently working on post production but i cant seem to find a lighting that i feel comfortable with for my shots.

Looks good so far.

What type of lighting are you using? Static? Dynamic?
As the shadows are looking very black at the moment.
Perhaps making the Environment Colour subtly brighter, such as a grey/blue would help?
(View > World Properties > Lightmass > Environment Color)

This simulates the effect of diffuse lighting in an environment, generally illumination from the sky itself on areas not directly hit by sunlight.
So it's usually best to make it the same general colour of your sky texture for realism.

I'd also suggest that your scene needs a focus, such as an object or story being told by the props.
That way it will be easier to focus on where you want to set up lighting and cameras.

Its looking good so far but I agree with SirCalalot it needs a main focus point something to draw your eye to straight away. If this was an oil drum warehouse I would imagine there would be some racks where the drums where once stored something like this and some more oil drums about the place. Also something like an old broken forklift that maybe was not worth keeping when the place was abandoned.

Hi. this looks really good! can i ask your process on making the plants? do you high poly modell the leaves and bake the normals and ao out or use leaf pictures to model them and extral normals from photo reference? thanks!

Thank you very much for the replies, i really appreciate it. I really like the idea of an old fork lift, i wish i would have taught about it earlier. for this turn in, im going to have to play around with what i have, ill have some more oil drums around etc. the final turn in is going to be a moving camera for my video reel. but for now i get to take one shot only. i guess ill do the forklift in the future on my own time. I could also use it as a separate prop model for my videoreel.

TIM . i actually did not use normal maps on most of the plants. a couple of them called for it. but most of them i just made an alpha on my texture and a very nice spec map. everything else was done with the materials on UDK. i addd some reflections to some of them and some SSS. they were actually a lot simpler than i thought.
What did take me quite some time was the fact that i didn't really like the plants i found on the internet that were already cropped and separated from the background. some of them i went and took my own pictures, painted or cropped myself patiently. i did paint on top of all of them and edited them on photoshop to get the look i wanted tho.

also where i did used normal maps, i decided to paint hight maps instead of sculpting. it all depends on what look you are trying to get and what you feel more confortable with at the time. i normally sculpt everything, but for some reason i felt like painting, and it gave me somewhat the look i wanted.
