  It has some great features like being able to lock islands to specific orientations, group islands together, and lock specific islands to remain overlapping while the others are unique. The packing process supports all of that seamlessly.

  Does anyone know of a way to make shells rectangular in uv layout, for like bent tubes and such?

  Once you split the tube and drop it to the UV canvas, go there, put your mouse over it and hit "r". If it can, it will lay it out as a rectangle.
