Photoshop + Normal maps + Smoothing problems

Greetings guys this is my first post here on Polycount but I have been lurking for awhile (just registered tonight, this thread was the plunge I needed to do so)

Anyways here's my issue.

I have this model, it's a low poly Glock 17 that I am using with a normal map baked from a high poly, all done in 3DS Max 2013.

All is well with the baked normal, it looks good even in Nitrous and I am happy.

But wait, I want to add some embedded text and logos to the normal map, so I load up Photoshop. Did all my work, got everything looking nice, save it and what the heck?

What happened? In the above picture, all I did was open the normal map that was fresh baked in Max, press Ctrl + S, and closed Photoshop. That's it. No modifications, no changes. Just open, save, close.

As for the model, no changes were made either. Literally all that happened was it updated to the freshly saved normal map and got all messed up.

Now I am a beginner, this is my first high poly -> baked normal -> low poly with home grown diffuse/spec/AO etc textures all made in house. So this is all relatively new to me (my only prior background in 3D work is environment, mapping/modeling architecture) so I'm trying to learn as best I can.

I've done a lot of googling, but nothing is showing up that I can think of to search for.

If anyone can give me some advice on what could possibly be going wrong here I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks
