I was thinking, when I do a render and my output window shows up telling me what it is doing and it says my version of Mental Ray is from Feb 2 2011 and that sounds kind of old.
Is there a newer version out and if so how do i get it and what does it add?
Thanks

It's owned by Nvidia now. http://www.mentalimages.com/products/mental-ray.html

but most stuff isnt exposed in maya... sad...
Mental Ray / Nvidia get's really pissed at Autodesk about this. Really. Pissed. Not naming sources, but apparently Mental Ray is five years ahead of what Autodesk is putting in because Autodesk is too damn lazy to test anything, which pretty much fits the bill of what we already know about them. Plus, I mean, it's not like they have any major competition.
At any rate, once in a while the geniuses over at MR will post up command line exposure to stuff on their blog. http://elementalray.wordpress.com/tag/mental-ray/
See this entry for Unified Sampling... so much butter than the other sampling methods! http://elementalray.wordpress.com/2011/10/31/unified-sampling/
also the other way around... nvidia (mental images) is not making the integraation that easy... but thats an other storry... they are now working together to solve this issue... mr is now a plugin in maya 2013...
Considering Autodesk's own rendering engine is childs play, I don't think it's wise to design a rendering engine around the software instead of designing software around the rendering engine. You put an engine in the car, not the other way around. I'm glad they've both made steps towards this plugin. It sounded like we wouldn't see it until 2014, but this is good news indeed.
