Wanted to start posting my work for this contest. I started thumb nailing and silhouettes, but they all felt so ordinary. Eventually I decided to try some crazy stuff and got somethings that I liked I spent all day yesterday refining the ones I chose. I might also try doing a hammer but haven't found a design I like yet. also I'm new to posting pics and might have some trouble getting used to it here. any help or a link to how to get gifs working here would be great. Thanks

Update: paint over target for final look will bake and texture tommorow will revisit angelic axe afterward.

i love the heads of 2 and 3 of the first bunch, however i feel the handle from no1 works best, the others seem a little too top heavy and flimsy looking for a big weapon. Id have to say my favourite design is the very last one, would love to see that taken through to final concept

just great overall balance and gesture, looks like a really powerful weapon

I see what you mean about the handles, I still feel I need to do some changes to the angelic mace before i start modeling but I think I'm gonna focus in on that one first.

Thanks for the feedback guys, settled on these two and will start modelling the blanks and other parts, I will definitely tweak the designs from here on out in the block out phase as is necessary. The angelic mace seems very complex at the moment, yikes.

I'm with AimBiZ on the mace. It's an absolutely gorgeous piece of concept art, but it's more an ornamental staff then a weapon really. Maybe you ought to add more bits to it that look like they would hurt you, badly. Like long knife-like ridges running across the height of it, similar to those you have near the base of the mace's head.
Badass work none the less man! Keep going!

Though very beautiful!, I think all of these designs might be a little too noisy. Too much small detail. Darksiders has a chunky style.

With that said, I love the handle on the Angel Mace! If you simplified the actual mace part I think you'd have something special with it. I really love that noted detail just below the guy and the design of the pommel. What if you mixed that detail into a mace shape for the top? One other note; with the limited polycount, keep in mind that cylinders eat up a lot of polygons not to mention the 3 dimensional bust.

A lot of potential here. I love your rendering abilities! That gold is a thing of beauty. Nice mixture of warms and cools.

I slept on it and had some wicked ideas this morning on where to go with the mace. Going to make the bust a single stoic face. The idea of modelling out the half figure still haunts me.Thx BOBo for reminding me about that poly budget. The rings at the top of the mace will be more weaponized and simplified I will also do some side views today to get a better feel of the other angles I will be dealing with. Now that I have the idea grounded I will infuse the darksiders feel into every facet I can find. Thx again for all the crits and ideas!

New concept for the top of the mace and revamped to fit the Darksiders look, still could use some simplifying but its a lot more chunky and less detailed. I tried to work on the bigger shapes and the sharp edges to make it more menacing. Also got the dreaded lay off. So I guess this contest will be my new full time job so I will be all over this for a while can't wait to start modelling.

Thanks guys, I have a couple weeks before I start looking for a new gig, will take advantage of that as best I can. The thing about the industry is companies change, some make it, and some don't. I guess I put in my best effort so I'm OK with that. This contest came along just in time. so much creativity on this site and great folks to help you out.

The 2nd angelic axe is correct (the one with the female face). I think it could go straight into the game exactly like that. If I was going to give any crit it would be that the shape of the wing-blade could use some tweaks (the feathers are not descending in size like you would expect in an actual wing). The gold bracket on the top of the wings could be a little thicker and more geometric. I am an environment artis at Vigil as opposed to a character artist, so feel free to take the crit with a grain of salt.

Got held up on some stuff last couple days, thought I would have more free time but boy was I wrong, dealing with edd and taxes and such plus I have a nasty nasal infection to boot. I managed to do two quick blackouts mixing and matching new and old ideas kit bash style. Ended up with an axe somehow. Also got a sketch of a demon hammer that I like and will refine for tomorrow. Not sure if I will commit to this axe just yet as I feel it's too similar to some other Darksider weapon I saw not exciting enough or whatever. hopefully the demon hammer has more pop.

There are plenty of similarities that are easily recognizable. You'd probably have a solid design if you took the previous mace and the central elements of this blockout and combined them. I'm itching to see that new demon hammer too. Keep it up man, regardless you're going to have one hell of an entry. Feel better.

Exactly suburbum, I ended up reusing too many elements here and there. I gotta say angelic theme is tough. I have a few more things I might try but I think I will see if I can play with more organic demon stuff for a bit and see if I like it more.

mashed together another variant block with some elements flipped from the concept, kinda like where it can go from here, crescent blades are still bothering me for some reason, side view and pommel needs some lovin. Gonna take a break from this one for a bit and revisit it later.

Those blades still bother me practically speaking but the design looks a lot more unified. Really good job on the head piece. Looking forward to see this evolve further.

There are some things I want to do to the angelic weapon before I get too involved with it. I have to say I will probably enjoy and produce a better demonic weapon as its more organic and more up my alley. for the latest concept

I need to play around with the boney growths at the top as I don't think they look to hot right now. the pommel is also just temp till i figure out what I really want to do for it. Any ideas?

I have to say I agree with bobo, I think that angelic concept would make a great axe. As for the demonic one you just posted, I have a hard time seeing this in the 1500 tris range with the amount of detail the silhouette has. Since you went with a handle made of bone, maybe the pommel could be an exaggerated joint like this:

The newest demonic concept is looking great. Seems like it's going to be dog to keep it down to 1500 poly's though. If you pull that off it might be the best overall Hammer. Great starts.

I went back to the angelic axe concept and remodeled the old mid core, removed head core and also reworked the blades. It's getting closer to what I want in 3d which is a bit of a relief. made the pommel more symmetrical and simple to save on polys later, old pommel would be too expensive. I will revisit the other stuff I have brewing today and see if I can't create a simpler and more organic design for the next weapon. Here is the block with a quick paintover. Also need ref to angelic runes if anyone has any of hand. otherwise will look for them some time today.

Your darksiders hammer kicks ass man!! Its probably my favorite hammer design on here! I would change the pummel though. There is too many that are similar on here and in the game.
