[3Ds Max] Some newbie questions about bones

Hey everyone,

So I've got a model that is already rigged and skinned, two hands and a gun:

This all appears to be one Mesh, but when I move one of the bones on the pistol, parts of it are able to move seperately from the rest of the mesh:

How can I do that?

What I want to do is switch the gun out for a similar one I've made, how would i best do that?
