[WIP] Glock 19

Hello there! Thanks for taking the time to view my posts.

I've been working on a Glock 19 model for a few days now, and finally got to a point where I can ask for feedback. I'm looking for critiques on the model, the renders, AND the presentation (trying to make good habits). I'm going for a photo-real SWAT pistol for a 1st-person shooter.

Forgot to mention that I'm only at about 70% finished with this hipoly, so there are spots (mainly on the grip) I haven't gotten to yet. Wanted to get this critiqued before I move on to those parts.

the slide is looking a bit too soft on the top chamfered edges. also the area above the trigger (the recessed area near the trigger housing pin) looks like it needs to be recessed in a bit more, and just blend in more with the rest of the gun.

You captured alot of detail, realy nothing i can complain on.

Looking forward to see the lowpoly and bakes, nothing gets me as excited as a nice bake.

looking much better now. 1 more crit tho. the sides of the grip (the grainy part) should be extruded in, should it not? yours is currently extruding outward.

Oniram, I believe it does extrude outwards, at least most models I've seen have it that way.

seems as tho you are right. XD. the contours around that area in his reference made me think otherwise (maybe the lighting?) but i googled n found some other shots. my bad.

I'll cook this thing up in a jiffy. My tri budget for this particular model is way higher than normal, so I should be able to capture quite a bit

@Oniram - No worries, mate

I thought it looked strange at first when I was modeling it (the ref here doesn't show it well), but I checked around and it matched up. This gen has inward extrusions on the front and back, and outward extrusions on the sides. Almost did the one with all the little triangles...

The back of the frame right below the back of the slide needs to protrude out more like your ref.

As I grab the glock, put it in your headpiece.
One in the chamber, the safety is off release...

Looking good man but there seems to be a normal map problem on the top left part, under the slide. Other than that It looks pretty awesome dude (to me

After taking a good hard look at the assets in my portfolio, I've decided to push all my weapons harder. They need personality. I haven't textured them yet, plus the UVs were crap, and needed to be redone anyways :poly118:

I've added the following attachments:

Optima 2000 Red Dot Sight
M6 Tactical Laser & Flashlight
Osprey 9 Suppressor
Extended Magazine

very cool! im workin on a pistol right now too. the attachments are really neat to do.

only thing id say is that the holes for the release on the laser/flashlight needs to be longer. also thats a very.. interesting.. suppressor. lol.

Optima Ref

Mentioned it over on NGHS but was unsure how often you check over there.
Again I only bring it up because it gives you a chance to add some curvature to an overall cubic form.

Fixed some stuff on the HP and built a new LP. Still have yet to unwrap the new attachments, but wanted to post an update in case someone saw something not optimized correctly...

one thing that stands out to me is the front of the pistol grip, on the real gun, its curved, wheras yours looks very squre. I'm also not a big fan of the silencer, even if it is real, it looks kind of weird and sci-fi!

modelling looks good though!

optimization wise u can cull a fair bit off the light since at that position you'll rarely see it even when reloading.

looks really good but imo looks cartoony since it's all so smooth, the pistol grip esp
strange to see a blocky silencer but it's a nice change from all those tubes

Can't get alpha working in marmoset quite yet, but the bake came out pretty good. I'll clean the rest up as I texture

whats up on the back of the silencer. is that supposed to be text? looks like it only grabbed the shadows of that part from the bake. also it looks like youve got some weird white lines on your red dot. aside from that looks solid.

I believe those little grooves on the back of the suppressor arn't baking correctly. I'm using floaters and they may not be set right. I'll look into that (and fix the sight lens).

Got base colors down and the bakes cleaned up with engravings, textures, and logos. Still much to do, but wanted to post an update.

A little more base colors. Trying to get these shades of grey as close as possible before I start detailing. Still need embossed text on the light/laser body, too...

More surface details with engravings, labels, and scratches. A bit of material definition, but still plenty to do. It should be noted that I am using the diffuse map for the specular channel right now. I'll beef up the spec map as I go.

np. grabbed that from the reference thread in Technical Talk some time ago.

funny thing i was surprised at how odd that silencer looked. i had been using a reference that had that same silencer for a while and didnt even notice it until the other day.

for your textures. one thing i instantly noticed was the smudgy looking scratches on the slide. what you could do that would really make that look cool (something i found useful while doing my sniper), is take that layer and add a stroke to it in blending options. keep it black and inside, and mess with the opacity. it gives it some depth instead of looking like smears, and helps it blend with the surface better.

It didn't give the desired look, so I'll find another way to add depth to the wear. Probably in the spec.

I was a bit discouraged by the lack of interest in it.

Just wanted to post another update. More wear and material definition. Haven't touched the glass yet, and still haven't added wear to the clip. A little confused about how to texture the chrome part inside the flashlight, so it will look right both lit and unlit. Doing research.

Still much to do, but C&C is always welcome

Ok, so I set up a progress photo. Still a wip, but I'm nearly done. Been way too long since my last real update.

Still have to fix the groove on the bullet, btw.

It actually does have a lot of noise. I had too much low-frequency noise on the last picture. I completely rebuilt it and it looks much better now. I used a higher-frequency noise, and also layered a bunch of goodies in to make it pop.

I have a few other spots I want to touch, then I'll post another update for the critique gauntlet (probably my last before the final)

It's looking really good. A small thing that stands out for me is the logo you have on the side and the front of the gun. Seems too "new" for the rest of the gun. Give it the same treatment as the rest of the gun, scratch it, fade it out a bit.

Other than that cool work and looking forward for more posts.

Ok, here's my final shots of the finished texture in Marmoset.

The glass looks like doodoo because I can't get realtime reflections in Marmoset. I'm re-learning UDK right now so I can get better shots of the glass. I'm having quite a bit of trouble with that so far. When I figure that mess out, I can finally post a finished piece.

you forgot to crop out the bit of background in between the bullets. :P texture looks great, but for some reason the clip reads as the same material as the grip. you may want to make that look a bit more like the slide.

The clip material is actually the same as the body. I saw some clips that were metal, but I went with one like this:
