War Buggy WIP

Hello all! I'm currently working on a vehicle inspired from the style of Rage and Motorstorm. The textures are base, and most of the poly's are concentrated on the inner parts, so I'm planning to optimize those areas. Any feed back on how it can be improved are appreciated.

Thanks! The renders are done in 3d Max, I'm currently setting up the materials and preparing the model for UDK. I'll post screenshots as soon as I have them.

would you be able to post some close ups of the suspension? i was trying to make a dune buggy type vehicle not long ago had alot of trouble trying to work it out.

One thing that really stands out are the three horns on the top of the vehicle. They could be smoother than that and probably aren't saving you much in the poly count department anyway. I'm not a fan of the tire treads either - they look too simple.

Otherwise it's a cool concept!

Thanks for the feedback, What I'll end up doing is optimizing the parts you barely see and adding more details to the ones you do, such as the three lights on top, the rope, and tires.

Yes thats why on the first post I said "most of the poly's are concentrated on the inner parts, so I'm planning to optimize those areas"

Snader, riddlaz never once mentioned that it was a lowpoly. And he's said multiple times that he still needs to optimise it.

What do you think would be a reasonable amount of triangles for a vehicle like this in a modern game?

i honestly wouldn't know but if the wires for the final shots are anything like the first shots then i say you could knock out a lot

Thanks for the suggestion, the wires have changed a lot, I'll post some new ones when I get a chance. I'll see which other areas can be optimized in order for it to run smoother on the engine. I'm planning on finalizing the textures first.

Looks brilliant mate but one thing that caught my eyes was the chrome, the buggy is all rusty and has dirt everywhere but the chrome is clean and shiny like its new. Shouldn't the chrome get the same treatment as the rest of the buggy.

Dont spend time on the presentation of the mesh when cleary the vehicle lacks the basic understanding of texturing and mesh optimization. First of all you have to take care of the geometry, right now its looking like something in between game-art and movie CG.Some peices have alot of detail like the wheels, some lack alot of geo like the rope.

50k is much even for todays standards. You should aim for 15-20k, thats how much for example MotorStorm on Ps3 goes for. If you can do it in less, even better.

I added more geometry to the ropes and the lights but apparently the rope is still inconsistent with the rest, It's an easy fix, thanks for pointing that out. I still plan to do more optimization to the geometry. As far as the textures go, they still WIP. The model only has baked down imagery and some tiled textures. I still need to do specific details/specular/emissives.

What bothered me about the video was that you never really showed the buggy in its eternity.

I really love the blue sky. really compliments the model. But there is WAY too much noise. In fact, I would get rid of it completely. You can always touch up your render in photoshop. Some DoF would really help.

Thanks for the tip, you're right. I must have overlooked that, I'll tone that down a notch.

Only one request, and that would be to do a simple rig and show it driving, watching the build up with the panning , followed by the close-up on the rocket/jet turbine, I was eager to see it tearing across a post-apocalyptic landscape.

To be honest, I've never done a vehicle rig before. DO you know of a good resource where I can get more information on that?

I'd suggest maybe looking at the rigging for the buggy in UT3, I've not explored much since UT2004, so couldn't advise, even if you just animated in max manually, just to give the impression of a rig, it'd be cool, it's video after all, so just cheat.
