Mental Ray makes material slots black

Hi, I'm trying to render some ao for my low poly object, but when I switch the renderer from default scanline to mental ray, all the material slots in my material editor turn black. I tried rendering the ao anyway, and my ao map also turned out black. Although I don't think this is the problem, I've also made sure there are no inverted or overlapping faces in my UV's. I've also tried staying on default scanline renderer and turning on light tracer - the material slots then show up, but my ao map is still wrong - all of my islands are completely white, and the negative space is black. Anybody have any ideas what is going on? D:

Hey Jessica, a couple of questions.
1: Is this problem present when you start a fresh session of max? or is it only present in your scene file.
2: Have you installed any other 3rd party renderers other than mental ray.
3: Can you render scenes normaly using the render dialog.

this problem is still present when i start new files. it's not my file. i never installed any other 3rd party renderers. with mental ray mode, i cannot render scenes in the render dialog, only with default scanline. there are no special materials in the scene, only the default gray material on all of my objects.

but anyway, since i found out it wasn't a problem to do with my file, i just rendered it on a different computer. it was a school computer i was having problems on, so maybe someone had messed with the settings or something? ahh well, at least it wasn't on my pc xD thanks for the help!

I know that I just had my objects rendering black with mental ray but the shaders were fine. The problem was solved when I ran File>Optimize Scene Size. I'm guessing there were a bunch of trash nodes everywhere.
