  I think you need to turn your edge so you can create either a concave or convex face

  I'm thinking PhattyEwok is right. Look into turning that hidden edge which splits your quad polygon into two triangles. I know that Maya automagically decides to split between the two verts that are closest to each other. Probably same thing in Max I'd guess.

  if youre working on editable poly mode then you should check for the button "turn" in the modifier.
  you will then be able to change the direction a face is plit into two tris.
  i hope thats what u wanted to know, maybe i got you wrong though...
