Plastic garbage bags

Hi everyone,

Can someone direct me to a tut for creating black plastic garbage bags? I have been looking for any tuts online and here on the PC forums but without any success. I am attempting it now in Maya but the results look horrible. I am contemplating sculpting it in Zbrush.

Any hints or links will be very appreciated.

Use reference and ZBrush. Or you could try playing with Ncloth to get a bag type shape, don't know how reliable or good it will look though.

I did some of these the other day, I winged it by eye with no real workflow as to how to do them. I used a tiling black bag texture which I merged from a series of photos. If It's an asset a player is gonna see alot then It's probably worth sculpting it.

I usually exagerate the 'winkles' a lot to have a nice bake

You can see the results of the bake inside UDK here

I dont have a clear shot of them tho...

The low was a polycrunch job (quick stuff really)

That’s a beautiful trash bag. How did you tie the top of the bag?

It's a really dirty job. It's just sculpted really roughly on the base mesh, dragged the top and bottom inside the mesh then sculpted pushing the different bands in, then detailed it roughly with a small brush. I would probably do it differently (as a separate object) now. Same for the top. I would do a cylinder as a different object. But that was a fast job so it's just teared geometry now. this part doesnt look good to me, but once baked I touched up the low to make it more believable.

It's doing the trick once baked tho.

edit:

Dark areas are cavities (AO on) so you can see I didnt really bother much as the size of the object and shader makle it difficult to see really what's up in that area...

Hahaha, that's an excellent trash bag man. For real!

If you wanted to be hard on yourself, yeah, the top and tied portions are goofy...but come on now....no-one is gonna be able to zoom in that close anyways. This is the point where us artists alone will notice this lol...

This is what I managed to make so far in Zbrush.....still need to work on the knot. Not sure how to get the stretched plastic look.

its a start, but you have to remember, when modeling a trash bag, your actually modeling a bunch of junk, thats in a bag. I don't know about max, but XSI has a feature call shrink wrap, you could model a quick pile of junk (boxes, chairs, random cube, cylinders, poles, etc) and just shrink wrap it, and use it as a starting point for adding wrinkles and more detail.

Hey there ZacD, that's a nice feature in XSI. I am using Maya for this model along with Zbrush. I am not sure if Maya has that feature. But your method gives me an idea for a starting point. I will post soon my progress.
