So... I see alot of these community challenges X vs Y vs ... and they are all for next gen game models.... Soooooooooooo.... i thought, why not make one for low poly models!
Here is my challenge for anybody who is interesting
Subject: F-Zero The subject matter of this little challenge will be F-Zero! You have a choice of things to choose from! (im generous like that) feel free to do more than 1!:
Rules: - No more than 500 triangles - 128x128 texture size (maybe 256x256 for locations? suggest please) - Standard lowpoly render rules, see here: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=51622 - You can choose to model an existing F-Zero Vehicle, Pilot or Location OR Make up your own! - Have fun!:o
Guna continue blocking in my mesh today i think... i'd like to concept sketch it first but i cannot draw much :P and hi again Allan, nice to see you taking on some more 3D stuff! @super happy cow: haha, awesome xD nice to hear some tales of the past :P why cant you participate? James McCloud would be awesome
so yea, im definately getting carried away... should have waited before people actually started designing theirs... but oh well :P ill probably start a new one once more people get involved....
I'm not going to partecipate to the challenge with these!
First five ships were made for an NDS commercial game. Unfortunately, no publisher were interested in this game, so everything was thrown in the trash can. This was a pain for me...
Ships vary around 150-250 tris, with a 128*128 diffuse map.
Last two ships was a personal experiment! My objective was to use a maximum of 100 triangles and a texture size of only 64*64. Well, the experiment succeded!
They count respectively 92 tris (green-white ship) and 78 tris (crimson-yellow ship), both with 64*64 diffuse.
@Josh, this was? did not know that! no harm in letting people have another play with the style though.. right?:)
@Mr_Drayton, those are all really nice! good use of texture space... seems i still have much to learn when it comes to tiny texturing xD should be nice to see what you can make from 500 tris!
I might have to participate :P My hands are itching for some F-Zero tastiness. Guess I'll go the easy way out and model the Blue Falcon instead of getting into my own designs, for starters anyway.
@Super happy cow: Poor James McCloud!, model is look pretty solid, are those vertex colours i see? old school trickery! seeming as people are deciding to model existing craft maybe i will start afresh with an existing one also!
@Skyway, you cannot resist the F-zero tasteyness! looking forward to what you come up with:)
hard to give crits with that lighting, try rendering it shadeless and with over samples off (see link in first post to know how to do this) doesnt look like 500 tris though, could be alot rounder! wires would help
Got round to finishing the texturing, going to start on the character. I have a feeling that doing a decent character at 500 tris will be a lot harder than the craft.
wow..creating gif turntables is annoying as hell. Anyway, here be my entry, an original design i've dubbed 'Starkiller'. The shape is near final, but i'll be making some tweaks to it to improve the silhouette.
It's a measly 158 triangles, and i can probably shave a little off that on the bottom, the center line for some bits isn't used.
UV islands and shading splits will probably knock that number up a bit, but i should still be bellow the 500 tri limit when i'm done with it.
holy batspit, that was annoying. ..but i've finally found a method for doing gif turntables, converting them, and uploading them and not having it shrink.

So... i got a bit carried away, only wanted to block in the mesh which i started last night but instead i ended up starting off the texture work too!
Time to get the ball rolling:
Texture progress:
I modeled some lowpoly ships some time ago, but I'm not happy with them. So, I'm going to model something new. I'll definitely partecipate!

It isnt valid for this challenge as its not a 128 texture, but I'm working on a new one atm
will be getting back to my texturing later this week, hands full with modelling strange little creatures for work :P
anyone else cooking up some Fzero tastyness? its been a tad quiet :P
Edit : my machine refused to boot up with the card installed...

296 tris so far.
I've never done a low-poly comp. before. It's a lot of fun!
I need to dig out a copy of F-Zero X or or GX to get the views needed though.
Just started on the texturing.
First time doing a low-poly thing and wow is the texturing difficult.
The texture is just a 5 minute thing, not even happy with the UV layout yet.

Together.
I'll start on the environment.
