This is part of a project im working on for uni loosly based around the recent comiccon contest, also aiming to use hand painted textures on this

heres the concept

and current modelling progress

at the stage where i need to start thinking about a retop becuase the neck and ear area are a bit broken

yer so looking for any advice or crits on the project cheers

update - got the shirt done and detailed the body some more- i think im going to start retoping to make the low poly mesh unless anyone can see any problems or possible improvements

cheers its pretty easy though, i used a small brush with lazy mouse and masked them all, then used the deformation tools inflat -1

Hey man, awesome little details. When you say you used masks for it, did you actually draw rectangular masks on the surface? That sounds like a lot of work :-S I've seen other people use this method and have always been curious as to how they got perfectly clean masks!

cheers but not rectangular masks, i used masks using the brush,
so when your on top of your mesh hold ctrl (make sure to have lazy mouse on) and drag lines out, then use the deformation tools as mentioned above

ok retopping is done and the low poly mesh is made, and it comes in at a healthy 11790 tri's
which is under my 12k goal :P

I'm going to have to agree, your mesh could be much lower than that and still retain it's silhouette quite well.

The low poly character is a mess. How about you retypo the model by hand rather then letting a program do it for you.

kyleh : i used smooth and hpolish

kewop and ceebee : yer i need to look at it again that was the first pass just to get all the shape in im going to cut it down a bit more today

Loving the style of the character, your hi poly model looks sick with some fine detail. I have to agree that the low poly character needs to be reworked, topology is very confusing you could cut it down quite a bit.

ok ive reworked and reduced the low mesh, its now sitting at 10583 tris

ive also got it unwrapped and layed out and im gona do some normal baking now to see if its reduced enough/not enough etc...

ok progress below is viewport grab of the model using the xoliul shader, with just normals, base colours and the start of the texturing

the only bit im really happy with is the belly atm...:p this is my first proper attempt at doing a hand painted character, so any help appreciated

Still think the topology is wack duder. I would hate to be the person who would have to skin something like that.

I agree also the topology is the one thing thats really holding this back, it has potential to be a very great piece. Im not really a character modeler..or else i would do a rough paint over for you. looking back at your posts...whats interesting is in your third post you have some wireframes where the mesh actually looks fairly good it seems to have gotten alot messier after that point. I'd try to get the low poly mesh close to resembling that. Hopefully a more experienced person can give you some advice in the matter. Other then that the character has some good forms.

Did a quick rundown on what your edgeflow and polydistribution should look more like, now it's just a mess, to be honest!

why are you adding such harsh shadows to the diffuse? that's what the normals are there for.

ajr21764 + limesimme - the reason ive have the topology like i do is to help the silhouette and help define the creases and wrinkles, if i change it to a more even distribution like pictured wouldnt that loose the definition ?

almighty_gir - yes i know im just over killing it a bit to start off with so i can get everything in the right place then im going to tone it down when i start to add colour properly - it wont be that harsh when its finished

I don't think the impact would be as hard as you think, I'd say try and change some of the topo and see if you are happy with the new result!
