Yeah made my day too! I wonder if it's going to be a MMORPG, I kinda don't want it to be because I like the lonely warrior experience, multiplayer wouldn't be a bad idea though, just not Massive..
I wouldn't call that "Confirmed". It seems likely, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Anyway, if it is coming, I hope they can learn from the mistakes of the past and the significant improvements that Obsidian introduced to the visual and literal storytelling in New Vegas. Some consistently good writing and a lot of thought gone into the macro and micro layouts of the world would go a long way to making the game a damn sight more enjoyable.
Awesome. I really do hope they clean up the gamebryo some more, mostly because I think their games need, nay, deserve a better engine. But I get that it's an engine they are very comfortable using, and that this has obviously been in development prior to Zenimax buying id.
I've already said this on Kotaku but if they use Gamebryo they can consider one less sale from me. That engine is pure evil and no amount of modifying will fix that. Nuke it, start with ID 5.
Bethesda Game Director Todd Howard explained in a separate interview with IGN that his game would not use id Tech 5. The studio's new engine built for its upcoming title is more beneficial to creating huge, open-world games, such as Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, while id Tech 5 is better for more contained environments.
Sounds like how valve did with the quake sourcecode and stuff, hopefully this means a way better optimized engine while still keeping the plugin architecture!
Yep, their version of Gamebryo is really nice when it comes to modding; its plugin based architecture and ability to combine hundreds of different mods is what made TES for me. It would be sad to see it go.
What Gamebryo need is a massive revamp and I'm sure the guys at Beth are well aware of that. They have already shown some progress with Fallout 3 (which performs better than Oblivion) and I can see them implementing real-time shadows and stuff. If I recall correctly, New Vegas is based on the old build, hence it's not a very good example of what the tech is capable of.
In before gamebryo, no shadows, shitty animation, horribly uncanny faces, 4 voiceactors, dumbed down combat and everything else, world without much variety and a story that can be completed in 6 hours on level 1 thanks to level scaling.
In before they re-use a ton of assets from Oblivion instead of making new ones.
I agree with odium, spent 120 or 130 hours in Oblivion, and STILL haven't done everything. Love that game.
I'm excited to see this game. Their use of a brand new engine definitely has my attention, I am in the same pot as the rest of you. Gamebryo blows due to stability problems (and the animations are fairly meh too)
I put lots of hours in it, don't think I really even touched the 'main story' just odd jobs and such, I got through the first portal gate thingy and lost interest.
I'm not buying it if they don't improve the animation/lighting, Bethesda was really behind the times graphics wise with Fallout 3, it felt like playing morrowind 1.5.
The best thing in Oblivion (which there was sadly nowhere near enough of) was the thiefs guild or whatever it was called, which had you breaking into homes and using stalth. It really got me in the mood for Thief 4 and Hitman 5... Shame I'm STILL waiting for even a sniff of a pic from them even now

It does sound more like they're iterating on gamebryo, with more engine improvements.
I'll credit obsidian and Bethesda for the bugs though, both the companies have a proven track record of buggy games.
Love the Elder scroll series but Oblivion was a bit of a speed bump for me, hopefully they'll get back to the awesomeness of the previous games. (minus the bugs of course)
Really need to get some better animations in their games as well, although I do crack up every time I see someone jump in Oblivion so its not all bad.
the dark brotherhood were the highlight for me (assasins guild) the mission in the house with the murder mystery game was fantastic
Totally man!
I remember completing so many assassins quest, then stealthing into one house expecting the same, but my bloodnote was planted by some crooked assassins from within the brotherhood! Once I made it into the house a bunch of them tried to finish me off! Then theres the attempts to kill me in my sleep etc
Badass! something about the whole brootherhood was just so damn cool.
Yea Dark Brotherhood was a lot of fun. I did those before the main quest, then I basically Role Played that the main quest was a sort of "redemption". I went to the main Assassin lair and killed everyone (or KO'd the unkillable people).
Sooo much fun! Still need to do the thieves guild though.
I can't wait until this comes out. Although I am in a similar boat to others, I'm not sure if I can handle the great time suck it will be. I spent too many hours in the last one. It's almost shameful. I loved/hated being a vampire. It happened to me 2x.
please, please have two player online co op. you don't even have to support it via story. it doesn't have to make any sense. just let someone roam the world with me.
Awesome news Gamebryo is indeed a very flawed engine, despite it's many positives. The AI is very glitchy. Animations are all hand-generated segments (no mocap), which makes it look very stiff and awkward. Here's hoping they've updated the engine, or put the old girl to sleep.
I'm hoping that they steer more away from the consolization which was Oblivion, to more Morrowind. If it's just Oblivion with prettier graphic, I couldn't care less, only reason I played it at all, was because modders saved the game from being totally crap on PC.

Shit this is going to blow my mind!
Looking forward to this!
pretty much every elderscrolls game has been a direct sequel then.

groovy!

I'm not as much afraid of gamebryo as I am of their character artists and animators though.
It would be nice with some proper shadows from the sun though.
This passage is particularly interesting:
Stoked on this
It's a pretty crappy day outside with the freezing rain and all, but this, this was quite a ray of sunshine! =D AWESOME NEWS!

Anyway, I would love to see some basic co-op, but I'd be happy with just single player too.

In before I buy this fucking game anyway.
Will be getting this one fo' sho, if they rework / use a new engine then that's just a bonus xD
If the new one is that, but with better visuals and hopefully not as many bugs, then I'm moist...
But they need to sort out the engine, its buggy as tits...

Will be a pity if it's built off of Gamebryo...
I don't give a damn if the engine is better or not, I just want more ... now wheres them tissues?
i hope they go more morrowind than they do generic tolkien tho, morrowind's world was infinitely more character full.
totally agree
I was all excited for that one, and then when I finally got there, one of the characters went all batshit and murdered everyone herself. T_T
Totally man!

Yeah, it didn't seem like a HUGE leap from Morrowind (IMO). The game itself is still one of the most played, even after 4 or so years.
I just hope they make it looks AMAZING, get a new animator, maybe some kind of multiplayer interaction, and thats about it.
The story is always good, quests and always fun! I wonder if it's going to be in Skyrim?
