You have 4 weeks to finish with the following specs:
Create one of the above character classes into 3d.
Important: Your entry must include your team's logo emblem, or colors, or both, on your character's skin, gear, clothing or weapons. If logo, it must be visible on your character. If colors, your character should posses obvious clothing tones of your chosen team. For logos and colors, visit - Here
3000 tris total for character, weapons, and gear.
1024x1024 for diffuse, specular color, specular level, glow, bump, opacity, and ambient color. Example, one 1024 diffuse sheet, one 1024 spec sheet, one 1024 Gloss sheet, etc. No Normal map sheets allowed.
Breaking up texture sheets into smaller texture sheets is fine. 4 x 512 maps or 2 x 512x1024 etc, is fine.
All lighting solutions from any software package is permitted.
All shaders are permitted.
Final presentation image should include texture sheet, wireframe, and full colored model. Posing model is optional, and adding a pedestal is optional (pedestal may use its own set of unlimited triangles and textures). If a pedestal is added, it must contain no objects that character can pick up and use.
Hand-painted is awesome, but it seems curious that they would still allow bump maps. Are there MMOs that use bump but not normals? I would think normals make for less intensive realtime shaders.

Would you really build a high poly model just to bake the lighting on? I'd see no reason why you wouldn't be allowed to do this. Technically it could all be painted.
yeah, it's weird... before there were normal maps people baked AO. Considering that I've done statues (basically a character that doesn't move) at the same specs for an MMO and I baked AO... I'll just go ahead and do it and if I get disqualified, fuck 'em!

Seems kind of weird that they would get so specific about the method, but it seems like they want it to be 100% hand painted, or just say "do it blizzard style". That would probably make more sense than trying to list all of the things you can't use...
No fancy techniques but you can use any lighting or shaders you want... seems kind of weird.
"no baking lighting info" is a bit misleading as well. I think he's referring to baking AO or similar from a highpoly. People have been baking vertex lighting or ao type data into lowpoly meshes since the dawn of time. IMO it totally fits within the realm of the challenge specs.

Yea stuff like what this is what I would expect people to do in a challenge of this type, but you know with slightly more up-to-date tools. It seems like baking some lighting even as a guide to do your painting is helpful, not to mention you can use it to bake in some subtle gradients...
I just don't get why he wouldn't let people do that kind of stuff.
Sounds like the official comp is going to be sans-normal map too then, since it's staying in the realm of MMO art style. Should be interesting to see pan out.

I didn't mean to come off as all-knowing, I was just going off of FredH's response that was quoted above in response to the post on GA:

I was under the impression that a few MMO's use them, but not the majority, which I think is what FredH is going for. Sorry if it came off in the wrong way.

Could be a fun little warm up for the main battle.
hmmm, you think they'd mind if I modeled some animatable mouths on to them? And what about the enviornment? Do they have to be on a flat plane?
So when are we gonna have a WIP thread for it?
yarp, this is the warm up to the main event.
"Fuck, sweet... A Dominance War."

Must have been a typo. No bumpage of any sort!
making war while making love?
making love starts wars sometimes?

mmos don't use normal maps? *_*
WoW = Doesn't use normal maps
therefore:
All MMOs = Doesn't use normal maps

Off-topic, but check out videos from Tera if you haven't. They're doing really cool stuff with current-gen specs and in an mmo setting.
Thanks bro!
