Problem Baking Ambient Occlusion in Maya

Im trying to bake an ambient occlusion onto this Mask and i keep getting black blotches and most of the occlusion is missing from the map. Reading up in it i keep seeing that it has to do with the UV overlapping.

Fine so i dragged all overlapping UVs off the map to get rid of that problem but it hasnt helped at all.

My question is i originally split the mask and then mirror/welded it later so it would be uniform. However this was done long before i UV mapped it. Also some items were combined into the model when i repoened it ( since its an OBJ) but it didnt effect the UV at all. Any help on how to resolve this problem would be appreciated. Here are some pictures to get a better idea of whats going on.
