I'm re-writing this post to show what I've got so far.
My goal with this project is to re-create as much as possible from the Zelda universe.

This is how Link looks so far:

This is the Hylian Shield:

I'm also working on the Master Sword, but I'm nowhere near final on that yet, so I won't post it in this post yet.

Hope you like what I have so far!

the wood on the back looks really nice. purple on the front looks a little strange cant really decide why though

Very nice. I do agree with the purple looking a little strange, maybe darkening/saturating it a bit more where it starts to meet the raised details and metal border? Also, that spec on the purple is looking way awesome, and I'd love to see some of that brought in to the diffuse with something subtle to bring it out a bit more. On the back, it just looks like it could use a little more love. The wood looks like it's behaving a little funky around the edges of the planks, and adding some sort of veneer around the border could help set it back a bit.

At the moment your wood texture would look great on a cabin floor, but not for a shield. I think the planks should be larger and less uniform. They look beat up enough, but too perfectly rectangular. That's my 2 cents anyway...

In general I like it. Metal texture is nice on the left view and as for the right one it's maybe too grey. A wood texture has some scratches and it looks frayed but the face of your shield is quite new.

I agree with others and should add that your color balance is looking a bit strange- orange, purple, red and metal. Try to play wit colors

You could possibly add some scratches and dents from where the shield has taken a few hits.

I think some of your colors are bleeding into the other parts. Try masking the high poly model with different, bright colors and then bake that down to a diffuse mask. This will help mask things out more accuratly then by doing it by hand.

something about the wood is just bothering me...maybe try changing the color hues and saturation of each plank to give it a more realistic variation? Other then that it's a great solid simple prop

Fantastic job, but the reason why the front looks weird is the lack of dirt and grunge that the wood on the back has.

you're missing some dust and grime in the crevices, seams, and creases on the front. In the areas where blue meets metal, you could kill some specular and put some dirt in there to really pop and liven it up some. A great way to do this would be to use a high detailed height map, and only sample the darks. Select those darks, and if its a fine line expand & feather your selection to get a wider area. drop that in the specular & a slight color in the diffuse, and you'll be rockin.

I did some test inscriptions just to see how it would look, and I actually think it looks pretty cool!

Aw hell yes. Definitely go for the inscriptions, but if you're using nDo, I'd suggest using paths to make it look cleaner.

I'm a little iffy on the specular color of the blue, it's a tad too cyan for my tastes, maybe drop some of the saturation on that. Also, the rivets holding the arm strap need some color to them instead of them being the same brown as the strap.

Keep it up, it's looking wicked.

I'm not too keen on the scratches, if only because they are the same color as the undamaged parts. It makes the shield look like it's made out of a solid blue material like foam or something.

the crack stuff looks a lot better now! i think you're a *little* heavy handed with it though, may want to pull that back some around the rim of the blue bit

can see in some of these- with yours i think you could do some masking of the areas back, or fade it out a little smoother, and maybe lighten the diffuse slightly to punch it a little more.

I'm not completely sure what you mean I'm afraid. Do you want me to lighten the border of the blue up a bit?

image may be easier:

i posted that other image for reference, look at the innter parts of the buttons where the holes are, the dirt in those cracks vary in width and most of them the dirt is not even all the way around. They noise of the dirt in those cracks also mirrors the metal texture, cracks, dents, and is somethin to think about that could be cool to include in your texture.

Alright.. Time for another update.
Been experimenting with nDo, and I absolutely love it! Nifty little gadget!

I'm getting pretty happy with everything except the main, blue area. I can't seem to figure out how to make it look like painted metal. Any help is appreciated!

beautiful work here, i would tone down the AO just a bit inside the edge on the outside of the shield, its a little too obvious, but this still looks damn good!

As for painted metal, try doing some color scrapeoffs here and there and experiment with the specular map to really bring out the material

I started working on the Master Sword.
Hoping to one day have modelled all of Link's accessories. I probably won't, but it's a fun thought.

I was inspired by the Comicon Old Link when I modeled this, but I still wanted to make it personal to me.

I don't mean to be rude or anything, but that doesn't look like the Master Sword, unless it is some variant that I've never seen before. The version I know of looks like this:

The crossguard looks like two wings and doesn't have those emblems/decorations on them. Might need a little redesign if you want to be accurate. If making something new was your objective, then by all means, keep it up! Great texturing work!

I get what you mean, and I agree that the crossguard looks nothing like the Master Sword.
I was trying to make a sword that looks like it fits into the Zelda Universe, and make it look special enough to be the Master Sword.

Really sick shield:) The sword looks great so far, but personally I would change the parts that are to the left and right of the triforce. Just a thing that came to mind not really something that makes or brakes the model.

Edit: Realized that I didn´t specify what I though should be changed about them. I think it would look better if it was a bit dragged out so the angle wouldn´t be as sharp.

I do agree with you about the pointy things, but I decided to keep them the way they are because they were an element from (most of) the original design(s) that I wanted to keep to keep the resemblance as good as possible.

Man I am really loving the detail on these peices!

My only crit is that the small details on the hilt are kinda getting lost towards the ends of the protrusions. Maybe if they stayed as thick and large as they start out in the center it would read better

Honest to gosh, I think the original Master Sword looks like crap! Looks like a freakin' toy sword you can find in a toy store.

Honestly, I think you've exaggerated all of the features that make the Master Sword look like a toy to begin with.

I always thought the Master Sword's design from ALttP looked very industrial, and not at all like a toy:

I was actually looking at the sword from The Minish Cap, and I still think I will change mainly the crossguard to look more like that one.
Will probably be a kitbash from all different zelda games in the end. :P
