Maya: HELP, objects not present -- how to recover them?

So I've been working all day and saving sequentially as I progress. My files
are spread out in various folders. No main project file was created with all
objects nicely saved in an appropriate 'assets' folder (instead, they were
imported into the scene and the scene saved). I've also imported shaders
from other folders on my harddrive. Stupid, but that's the backstory, as I
was in a time crunch.

So I now have .ma files 'full_setup_t-pose.ma' (thru 4 sequential versions)
that have an average filesize of 1.7mb. Total polygons for the model are 8K,
with textures of 2048. Seems correct.

Just tried to re-open one of those files after working on something else, and
I'm missing objects in the scene, shaders are back to default in the HyperShader,
and all layers are gone (had objects seperated on layers as well as a
controllers layer).

How can I 're-point' the missing objects back into the scene (their names
show up in the Outliner, but no actual geometry is there - visibility is
on)???

I've tried looking for some way to bring them back into the scene via
right-clicking the Outliner, checking all options in the Attribute editor,
searching the Component editor, looking for option in the Hypergraph.

Here's what my scene looks like now:

It used to have a head, hair (inner/outer shells), torso, pants, shoes.

Has this happened to anyone before? How can I get them back along with my
shaders as they were saved?

I don't think this could have happened at a worse time... :'(
