File hosting solutions...

So anyway, i have a blog for my gaming side, but i also need a file storage solution to get a portfolio up.

it must have the capacity for unlimited bandwidth (or at least silly huge... i managed to chomp through 10gb bandwidth allowance in under 48 hours...), and a decent storage capacity.

but i'm very new to it and don't know which hosts to trust/distrust. is it as easy as googling "hosting" and going from there?

what do you guys use and would say is reliable?

I was using Fatcow for a year with no problems until I decided to put it all on dropbox for free.
The free dropbox doesn't have 10gb space though, why is your portfolio that big :o Mine is barely 30mb altogether!

Anyway, Fatcow was the best looking cheap host I found last year and I like their name :) I'd go back to them if I ever needed more than 10gb space~

How much are you wanting to host? If its under 2GB just get Dropbox. I use it for my portfolio.

Watch out for bandwidth. I got the email a couple times and they shut down the sharing.

What's the limit with Dropbox? I haven't shared that much stuff over Dropbox, but still.

I have no clue. It's not in the TOS, it's when they feel it's "too much".

+1 because it's free. If you just want to host images, Dropbox will work fine. If you want a full page, that's different. There are other sites like Dropbox also, that offer more space. I just prefer Dropbox because of it's popularity and app support.

You can host html pages using dropbox too. Doesn't support php though.

I'm at Hostgator at 5 bucks a month with unlimited space, bandwidth and subdomains. It's really sweet :p

Dropbox is great since I can access it everywhere, mobile to PC or Mac. That bandwidth thing is bit odd, it would be fair for them to tell what the actual limits are - at least when you cross them.

well dropbox closed down my folder for 3 weeks, because i went through 6gb of bandwidth in under 72 hours lol. stupid WAR players... why can't they just come to the Q+A session instead of downloading it?!

anywho... i've gone with this for now:
    http://unlimitedwebhosting.co.uk/

it's pretty nice, mostly user friendly. the only downside is i'm not able/allowed to activate directory browsing on my folders, they see it as a security risk.

and acording to their TOS, as long as you're not hosting kiddy porn, or warez, you could practically take a dump on their server mainframe and they wouldn't give a... crap, lol.

Hey guys, bumping this thread cause I'm looking to maybe change hosting here in the next few days (before my dreamhost account comes up for its yearly renewal).

Right now I'm paying $120 a year for service, which isn't bad at $10 a month, but considering I only use it for hosting some pics and scripts (whole site is under 40mb) seems like it might be more then I need.

I got dreamhost a few years ago because of the polycount members discount they had going, but other then the first year afaik you cant use coupons/promo codes? If not Im looking to maybe switch to using either powweb.com or keeping the domain with dreamhost and hosting the files on dropbox (like Adams been doing, though am not sure how that works with hosting the actual pages?). Any thoughts/suggestions/recommendations?

Actually, since this is getting brought up again, I've been looking for a cheap host that supports ASP.net, if anyone is aware of one. I need to change from 1&1, since they have JACKED up my rates, and I need to do some ASP development for demonstrating my code abilities to employers.

You know, I use to wonder why people kept asking on here, instead of searching google, but it's REALLY hard to find web hosting on google. The results are filled with sites that rate hosts, and most of the hosts in those 'articles' are dead.

BTW, you may find Dreamhost to be the cheapest option, even if you no longer get the discount. They were one of the cheapest linux servers I had seen out there when looking recently. You may want to check out http://www.fatcow.com/ though

You might want to look into GoDaddy. They have Windows Server based .ASP hosting, plus their hosting plans are 3 tiered so you can choose whatever is most useful to you compared to how much you want to pay. They also let you use coupon codes when signing up, or renewing. Additionally they have an ongoing sale for hosting, which you can also add certain coupon codes on top of for more discounts.

I'm currently trying out DreamHost for Linux based hosting though, however my prior hosting for the prior 5+ years was GoDaddy's Windows based hosting, and I haven't had a problem with that aside from their control panel which is unintuitive at best.

Yeah, I've looked at GoDaddy, and they've usually be way more expensive than other hosts. In the end, I may not have a choice though.

I have GoDaddy and it's been way better than what I was on before; cheaper too. The site interface and support has terrible navigation but everything else is pretty solid. I think I had a coupon code and pay 60$ a year or so for all I need.

Don't use GoDaddy.. at all. Go and read their T&C before considering them.

@ almighty: unlimitedwebhosting has an acceptible use policy in place so that means it's not 'unlimited' and subject to 'fair use'. Watch out for that.

I use one.com; a few gigs of storage, unlimited transfer and a .com domain for 50 dollars a year. Perfect.
