Well this came out of nowhere... They're releasing the full source code too! They haven't done that since Half-Life 2! I'm looking forward to the SDK update more than the game right now.
Meh. While this IS cool, (mostly the full source code release), I'd think that Valve is/are a LOT awesomer if they balanced development between all of their games (*cough* thecrossingandepisode3 *cough*) and paid more attention to their community.

you got to be kidding... I dont even know where to start....
Between the Polycount Pack, the new TF2maps.net competition and Chet helping L4D2 designers run playtests on Valve's servers I think they're definitely supporting the community enough.
Very much up for game time with some counters when the games done. Love games like this Brings back memories of the good ol days where mods amazed me. (they still do)
I've played through the offline practice a few times and played a couple of online missions. It works really well and the lighting and effects are great. It's obvious Valve has been playing with the lighting solution Source uses.
I also played around with the tile editor. Apparently you can make a set of tiles in Hammer with all the necessary entities (lights, weapons, ammo, etc.) and then build levels out of them. It's a seriously cool way to work, from the looks of things. The new lighting means it'll be easier to make extensive use of props without having to worry about funky vertex lighting.
Oh my God. I just finished an entire campaign. This game is completely balls-out awesome. I can't wait to see community-made maps and more Valve campaigns.
*EXCUSE ME* But fuck THIS! (source code is really awesome) What in the hell happened to Episode 3??? no... but they have time for free shit. lol
Yeah, I'm sure the entire Episode 3 team just dropped Episode 3 to work on Alien Swarm. It makes perfect sense for Valve to have everyone in their studio work on the same game at the same time all of the time. It's not like they'd divide their developers up into separate groups to work on multiple projects at once. That would be crazy.
Alberto Rdrgz as Zipfinator said Valve work in such a way as that they have several different teams working on different things within the company, which really makes sense and works so well imo. For example within Valve you have small companies such as Turtle Rock Studios who worked on titles such as CS and L4D. Alien Swarm was developed by the original team who made the Unreal version, just this time they worked for Valve. Portal was made by several students from Digipen who made Narbacular Drop.
They will have a seperate team working on Episide3, and frankly I absolutely do not mind waiting for it because these days hardly ANY games interest me or hold my attention. They don't have the charm that games used to because studios rush them out. Valve is one of the few companies that do not do this anymore and consitently release top quality games. And I can assure you it's not "free shit." It's a brilliantly designed game and I'd have gladly paid for it.....can't say I know any other companies that give out awesome free stuff like that either.
