Ooh boy....

Let me just say that I'm COMPLETELY new to modeling.
I joined after seeing all those epic entries for the Polycount Challenge...
So...
Am I the only one to be completely new to joining Polycount without an ounce of Modeling knowledge in me? >_<

    Welcome and good luck!

Stick around, read a lot, post your work regularly, even if you don't think its any good. With time and a lot of practice you should see your skills grow amazing amounts. I learned almost everything I know about 3D art from Polycount and its members.

Oh cool. I'm not/wasn't the only clueless one, then.
Does anyone have free programs to recommend? I've recently downloaded Blender, but I'd like to know what other people use...

Your first task is to model this tri-tentacled abomination.

Well you're better off than me, I've been here 6 years and I still don't have any Modeling knowledge.
    Welcome to Polycount.

    Derr....
    Um....
    Thank you?

EDIT: Does anyone know if Blender is good, or if I should get ambitious and spend money? Keep in mind that I probably won't be doing this for a job. >_<

It's certainly good enough and has worked for me so far. The biggest problem with it is that it's a bit different from the industry standards, so nobody has bothered to adopt it. Its UI is generally described as confusing, but that's partially because, again, it differs a lot from Max/Maya. Furthermore, 2.5 Beta should come out soon, which will improve the UI a lot.

Welcome aboard! And yea like Zwebbie said, Blender's due for a new build soon. Past that Id maybe try Nevercenter Silo and/or Luxology Modo as low cost (comparatively) alternatives to the 'big' packages.

This might be up your alley also: http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74849

Spend the money on a tablet, while blender is fully capable, there's no cheap replacement for a tablet.

(also keep in mind, experience and knowledge is transferable, so you'll be able to learn any program in the future)

(also, keep at it with an iron will, be humble, and listen to what people here have to say in the future)

This had me laughing for about half an hour. Awesome.

    Welcome to Polycount, B33TL3.
