TF2 - Polypack - honeymustard

Hi, I'm going to make a melee weapon, hat and a misc item for the demoman.

So far, I have decided on the hat, inspired by the movie Braveheart. Here's some concept art:

Chainmail and a crown, in case you couldn't work it out! Will start modelling this week.

There's a render of the crown so far. Unfortunately it's come out at 1,000 tris (and the limit is 800). So I need to spend some time cutting it down. Here's a picture showing the polys, if anyone could give me some pointers on what I could do to reduce the tris, that would be great:

...There has to be something wrong here, there's NO WAY this thing has 10 545 polys.

make sure you are not counting the actual demoman's poly's as well :P

max poly is 800.

Haha, you're right, I just selected every poly in edit poly mode, and there's only 544. No idea why I believed that number. Though it's weird that it is reporting that number, can't figure out why.

I'd suggest the demo-man model is still in the scene and adding to the count.

Ok, I fixed it, still, it's 200 tris over the limit (and I still want to add the chainmail, if possible). Should be an easy fix though, I think.

maybe you should consider making it paper thin, it wont look realistic and that but it certaintly will cut some polys.

the thing is if he made the crown one sided, you wont be able to see the backfaces ingame, they will be invisible.

You can easily cut down the polys on that thing! Just merge half the loops on the inside, and do some vert merging to get rid of the useless verts.

Doesn't that keep the same number of triangles though? I'm guessing when Valve refer to a poly limit of 800, they really mean a triangle limit of 800. Pretty sure everything gets triangulated by the compiler anyway.

double sided planes are easy to make. if he removed the imbetween and merged the verts it would have two sides but the inside would have the same texture as the outer one but that shouldnt matter

No, you save a very large amount of tris when you use this method. Especially on the inside of the hat where smoothness doesn't matter. Do it.

you see those triangles on the sides of the pokey uppey bits? You have triengles made up of two triangles. Try sitting down with a pen and paper and working out the minimum number of tris you can make a 2d shape in.

This is the logo for the Crypt School of Grammar that the Demoman apparently went to. I don't know if you can use this but I thought maybe you could put it on the crown or something.
