Deco brush in Photoshop? Or something...

Hey gents
I've been trying to do some caligraphic typed strokes (you know your typical sweeping pointy at one or both end typed deal) but am finding it difficult to get the fine pressure required to get the smooth stroke I want. I've tried messing with the brush settings but nothing is really giving me a desirable result. What's the usual technique here aside from having really good manual dexterity? I don't do much actual drawing in photoshop so I may be missing something obvious here.

Something that'd be nice to have is a tool like the decobrush from ZBrush where you can get a shape and kind of stretch it along the length of a stroke.
