I saw a good one about the early days of atari. Pretty amusing to see how many drugs they did at work.
I saw another on TV about the making of crimson skies. And another (possibly part of the same episode/documentary) about oddworld: stranger's wrath.
Heh, I remember the mock meetings we staged for that show at Oddworld, back in the day
It was basically a Microsoft puff piece. It did indeed feature Crimson Skies, along with Stranger's Wrath and Halo 2. Ironically, Stranger's Wrath was cut by MS shortly after that piece aired.

I remember watching something...On TV, and can not remember the name. It talked about arcades using carts inside of them so you only changed that, instead of moving the box. Well Nintendo took this idea, and put it in the home...
Another topic was the creation of Mario, and how Zelda was a game about the fantasies he(whoever created Zelda I guess) went on as a child roaming through woods. It was pretty interesting, but I do not remember...
G4's Icons used to be good before they changed the name to Gamermakers so they could call people like The Pussycat Dolls and Michele Rodriguez "icons"...
Pretty sure it doesn't exist.
To be honest it would really interesting to see a documentary about a game being made but you'd have to be there the whole time (1-3 years) to chart its progression (and you'd so get lots of footage of people just knuckling in and working).
That and all footage i've seen of game devs at work consists of an artist twirling a model around (in the background of interviews).
It would certainly be better what little we get to see on Special Edition games, seriously i want to know how you made the game now how awesomely excited the whole team is about it.
Then wouldn't that be a documentary on being an artist in the games industry? It's a lot more specific, and it's but one role amongst many more in any game studio.
At the moment we suffice with interviews, which are quite good, like the ones at Splash Damage.
theres a lot to talk about in games, how its more of an art than programming, crunching, and the hassles of working for a publisher, breaking in, etc etc
I think, someone should just do a stop-pmo of an entire studio for the year or two it takes to get the game out, would be quite funny seeing peoples beards just pop out of their faces ;D and seeing the days get longer, then the sleepin bags/sleepin under the desks.
If you beat God of War III you can watch docs. on all aspects of how they made the game. It's really quite interesting. I wish I could watch it on my computer...
I just don't think a documentary about game artists would be all that interesting to be honest. Apart from explaining some process. I can kind of see at a small studio where everyone is wearing multiple hats. Maybe following around designers or producers could be cool.
(yeah I don't know what happened to the sound after 2:35...)
and ya, the ones that come with the games themselves, like God of War and Halo and the others are probably as good as your going to find. Honestly I love those things, but I can't imagine too many people going out to a theatre or video store store to watch one.
All this reminds me, didn't Gamespot have some feature on some indie dev making some FPS on Mars several years ago? ... Don't tell me the segment was called Indievelopment. I think it was. I watched a couple of parts of that, but I can't remember how it went down!
Rise of the Video game by Discovery is a fantastic 5 part documentary.
Goes from the beginning all the way to present time and outlines companies, people, and many game system and how they got started ect and even has some cultural impact stuff thrown in too.
I watched one in college not long ago but it was more geared towards violence in the games industry, focusing on the GTA series and Doom, but still... it was interesting. Cant remember where it was from, ill try look.
The Silent Hill 2 one is by far the best game development doc I have ever seen. Does anyone know if the Metal Gear Solid 2 doc is online somewhere? That was also very...solid.

Thank you for saying what I was thinking, but much more eloquently.
DECENT was the key word.
Most of them are pretty crappy, "How It's Made" was really cheesy and vague.
