Program that records desktop and mouse?

I'm looking for a free easy to use program that let's you record your computer. I need to make a video of a performance issue I've found in maya 2010 that does not exist in maya 2009. I'd also like to make a video of the edge selection bug in maya. The video needs to have good frame rate or the bug wouldn't be noticeable. Ideally I would like to be able to insert captions as well.

That would very likely be Camtasia. However you might want to grab version 5, and not the current version 6 as it seems to be more efficient (v6 gave me big flickering problems with Topogun and Mubox, 5 was flawless, and I hear Maya behaves the same but I didnt test). It does captions aswell, very simple to add actually.

Camstudio is real good. I hate camtasia with a passion, it's buggy, slow, and it corrupts video captures for breakfast.

its opensource, down to the core (unlike camstudio the commercial inspiration). I used it for most of my YouTube videos.

i have always used camtasia, i rather like verson 6 - but i do have a beefy computer. i use it to record all of the video tutorials i make.

I just tried cam studio it's great, but it doesn't record at a high enough frame rate so everything looks kind of choppy in general. Any way to increate the input frames grabbed?

you can go to the video options and set the desired framerate- but if your computer cam't handle it there is not much you can do with camstudio.
The higher the resolution you use of course the more the performance and possible framerate drops. Whenever I recored on a Quad core I get really smooth results however in most 3D apps in higher resolutions (800x600+). You should also pick their encoder at first and not something like Xvid or h264 as their encoder is optimized for realtime with very crisp quality. Convert it later in virtual dub.

What is their encoder microsoft 1? That was the default it was set to.

download the additional camstudio encoder and decoder from the website

Lossless Codec: New CamStudioCodec1.4.zip | CamStudioCodec14.exe

install that, restart camstudio and set the video encoder to that one.

Hey. The CamStudio tuto is outdated. I know a better workflow and plan to rewrite or update soon.

...Had to tweak some options to make it work as defaults seem not to play nice with windows 7.
It was worth it. Brilliant workflow. I get perfect 30fps at 1280x1024. 4x faster than CamStudio, 2x faster than Camtasia
...
Oh, one note:
I eventually used CamStudio Lossless Codec (also free) instead of x264vfw.
Its much faster so I guess you could try recording higher resolutions. It requires recompressing of course but this kinda suits me.

Hey so I got it working in studio I had to record at 200fps in order to get it to come out smooth. The problem now is when I compress it to xvid it always comes out looking super slow like 24fps or something? Any way to compress a movie at 200fps?

24 fps is about as fast as people see, do you really need a 200 fps movie?

Yeah, I'm trying to show autodesk a lag bug not much point showing them a video where you can't see the lag.
