My first post here on polycount. I've been checking these forums reguraly for a while tho.
I'm making this next-gen weapon for a school project. I picked the SR-2m Veresk because of its rather strange shape, and because I've never seen it used in any games or mods.
It looks like it's a pretty obscure weapon, because finding good reference images for this particular model was quite hard. So for some small parts I had to make educated guesses, but for the most part, it's pretty accurate.
Anyways, the High Poly SubD model is almost done. Still have to add a couple of screws and other small details. Next up is the low-poly and then baking.

I was planning to add those holes to the normal map in photoshop later on. I guess it won't make any difference for the final result?

Normal maps still need a couple of fixes here and there and I need to add some extra details in PS, but that will be for tomorrow.

I've started texturing the clip, scope and reciever. I'm going for a very used / wornout look as it gives the gun more charachter imo.
As texturing isn't my strongest point, any feedback would be highly appreciated!
Anyone know if there's a a way to get gloss maps working in marmoset?
I am not feeling some of the scratches on this. I think the ones around the edges, where the gun may hit a surface are nice, but the ones in the middle of surfaces seem to evenly distributed.

The grips I don't agree with however. Maybe use wooden furniture instead?
I tried a lot of different things to get the same level of wear and tear on the plastic parts as the rest of the gun. I desaturated the top parts a little, as if they had lost their color over time due to the sunshine. I also added some dark residue (grease or whatever) between the grooves of the plastic at places that seemed logical. I think I just need to tweak the specular map a little more to get a more conviencing result.
@ES_139: my baking process it pretty straight forward. Just explode or detach overlapping parts, push the projection cage untill most parts are inside of it and make some adjustments per vertex if necessary. I think the most important part of a good bake is the low poly model itself, smoothing groups and corresponding uv maps. Also if you're using max, make sure to turn on supersampling when baking your normal maps, this makes a huge difference in quality.
@PieJesu: As you can see in the picture, older models of this gun had wooden grips, but this peticular model only comes with plastic. I wanted it to be accurate, so using wood wasn't really an option.
-Most important: wear off the surface "texture" (tactile texture, as in the noise in your normalmap) on spots that will see more wear, like corners. Also change the diffuse color, the spec (stronger) and the gloss (sharper). You can tell on this picture, even though it's blurry: http://russian-weapons.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/09/sr-2-1.jpg
-little discolored spots and marks, like paint, grease, whatever that doesn't come off anymore. You can see one on the bottom picture behind the trigger.
-Put some large scale, but subtle variations in spec and diffuse, I think it's all rather flat atm.
Also the front grip in most pictures seems like it's made from metal with this brownish, burned tint to it. Is there a version with the same plastic as well ?
I think making it black would help sell the plastic look more. Though, i would kind of prefer to see it done in wood.
It talks about the different shoulder rests they were going through, it's pretty interesting.
