I hear stories of people who win the lotto, and then 12 months later they're flat broke, and I honestly can't understand it.

I think that was when the lottery didn't have a lump sum option, so you win the lottery and the yearly payments come out to $30k a year. An extra $30k a year is nice but don't quit your job and buy a mansion.

Start my own small game dev studio, rest of the money I'd buy twinkies in case of an apocalypse.

That happens with lump sum winners too; they don't know how to manage money to begin with, blow it all, and end up with extreme debt.

Twinkies have a very short shelf life, so unless you're bringing about the apocalypse, you're wasting your time. (Please don't bring about the apocalypse.)

I wouldn't 'start a game studio', I'd put the word out that I'm looking for a small group of individuals, and then make games with them on an off and on basis, kind of a hobby thing like making games was for me in college.

I'd have to help the homeless so start a chain of homeless shelters to get them off the streets and put them to work maybe starting off with jury duties, volunteer work...ect...ect...[werid huh?]

Why help people who, when offered oodles of the public money, can't be arsed to help themselves? There's already plenty of setups like that.

Haven't really given it much thought:

give loads to my parents, brother, cousin and aunt and friends (good friends)
give a nice cut to some charities
    buy a house
buy some easily maintained luxuries - no Veyron or stupidly costly cars, maybe an Evo, Subaru, Honda Civic Type R that sort of thing.
set up a recording studio and label, so that my mates can earn a living doing what they enjoy
start up an independent game studio
travel for a while - hookers and blow everywhere in the world

Seriously though I'd probably pay off my loans and those of my good friends, set my parents up for retirement, give to charity, etc.

Actually I'd probably have already given quite a chunk to charity to begin with as it's a tax write off to get it down to the 50 million as I'd rather sick kids have a portion of my winnings than some bureaucrats who work for the state.

    1. Pay off student loans
    2. Get stuff like a new car (liking the 2011 Toyota IQ / Scion), condo etc
    3. Start a new age/coffee shop or invest in the local one here, with a painting studio upstairs to myself
    4. Travel to many many places
    5. Invest in a spiritual CG film or game

half and half it, half into the fund for the future, half for the 'now'.

the now half gets split up between family and close friends, a mil each or so. would leave about 16-17 mil . pay off house etc. buy another house somewhere else to rent out. say 15 mil left, divide between me and partner, and we can do what we like with it.

future money divided up, some just sitting there, some invested to grow for the future.

so im left with 7 mil or something to play with for short term. i'd stay at my current job for a while. probably hire a space and allow access to all my colleagues to make art after office hours. think about starting a small indie type studio to make the most awesome small games.

ooh it's fun to dream! :)

    Pay off all debts.
    Fast cars.
Make sure my Mom never had to work again.
Travel the world with my entourage of buddies.

We've all decided that whoever wins has to pay everyone's expenses for atleast a year while we travel the world. The only catch is that each person has a different role in the entourage. i.e. driver, cell phone answerer, umbrella carrier (a la p diddy). For one of my buds my role is to wear pimp suits and break dance on command. :D

I'll take the driver role as long as it's a bitchin ride... and you'll pay all the speeding tickets. :D

I wanted to do this, but not possible in CA unless you're REALLY loaded or live in the middle of nowhere. Was looking at designs too and found a few contractors who do it.

To make them from what I was quoted isn't that much more than a regular house.
