Sculpting Lips

Hi all - Any tips for Sculpting Lips (i'm using mudbox but i'm sure this is a pretty generic question) Struggling to avoid the 'fish lips' look which obviously isn't great!

Would love to hear some processes/steps if anyone would be generous enough to share!

im not sure what you mean by fish lips, but there are most likely people out there that have those aswell. what gender you want tips for might be good aswell.

haha I know what you mean by fish lips basically fish lips happen when you make lips on top of a flat face surface and dont bother sculpting all the surrounding muscle shapes

Im not sure if these will help you or not man, but i made a couple of vids last year sometime of a childs head, and another of a females head both about 1-2 hr sculpts.

I think one of the most obvious contributors to fish/botox/duck lips is making the upper lip come out harshly from the skin above it. The upper edge or outline of the upper lip is just a drop inward; the skin above flows smoothly to meet it, wherever the fullness of the lip determines it to be.

This usually occurs mistakenly in sculpting because of the desire to sculpt the mental symbol of a separate "lip," when, for example, if you're just sculpting a closed mouth, perhaps it would be more artistically accurate (judging on how an object actually looks, rather than the via symbols carried in one's mind) to cut in the division between the lips. Sculpting is an interesting study; it can teach you a lot about form, if you do it observationally.

Yeah I think that has been my problem in the past, 'draw' out the shape of the lips rather than actually working with the volume that is there

Yup, it's the change in colour of the lips from the surrounding flesh that often makes people mistakenly give them a harsh, defining edge all the way round. That and the left-brained "symbol" for lips that Vrav mentioned.
