I know alot of artist like to showcase there stuff on deviant art. I myself have the ole blog and use other social networking sites but have never had a deviantart page. Is there a better community there vs other places?..or lots of networking?..I guess i dont fully understand the draw.

i've seen an ocasionaly thing on devart, but the majority i've seen has led me to the opinion that it is a place for girlish looking boys that cut them selves because they are sad

I see a lot of people posting art work that isn't there's, claim it is, and have people comment on the art work and how great they are. Deviant art makes me sick. I have no interest or respect for that site.

I suppose its all about exposure at the end of the day. If your looking to get your work onto as many peoples screens as possible its good for that. Unfortunately i think there's a lot of garbage on deviant art as well. With that said, there's a ton of awesome work too.

I wouldn't discredit deviant art as a place where awesome work / inspiration can be found. i would, however, discredit deviant arts community.

*lol and yes i do have a deviant art page. I haven't updated it for a looooong time, or really signed in or visited deviant art in over a year. At least its not elfwood. *barf.

It's always seemed to me that there are much more professional locations to keep a portfolio and show your work like cghub.com and conceptart.org but thats just my opinion of course

I agree that it isn't the best overall, but there are some serious professionals on there like Adam Hughes, Genocidal Penquin, Leinil Yu, Craig McCracken, etc.

I think the thing to do is have multiple places for displaying your work to maximize impact. Keep a blog, use Deviantart, post on Polycount, you get the idea.

Yea there is some very good work on deviantart, but the main "community" acts very immature and reminds me of 4chan.

Im a traditional painter in my spare time and I put my stuff on DA and actually it was very useful to me as I dont know many painters in RL. I ended up with a bunch of friends on there that were great for crits and some of them were very highly qualified and career painters.

Yes theres the lameboi emo twats and the naruto fanart nerds. Cant stand either of them.

Also alot of chicks on there let their guard down, because its an "art" site and if you got semi decent art they seem pretty open to chat and etc.. while you root around their page and perv at the pics....

be very careful, DA has an extremely ugly user contract...They get a lot of free rights to your art, your name, your likeness, etc...I consider it generally to be a really bad idea to put any work on DA because they could jump through a few easy hoops and completely screw you over if they ever felt the need or desire.

I would absolutely 100% avoid ever putting anything up that I ever intended to sell, have sold in the past, or might sell, license, or share use of in the future.

Really though simply having a contract like they have completely turns me off to them regardless...

i used to use it... but i really disliked the community. A popular artist can just post any old crap and it'll be lik "OMG SO GOOD LOL XD KAWAII".

Deviant art is the Myspace for artist. Never liked it. Way to much junk to sort through till you get to some good stuff.

I have a profile there, hadn't even looked at the contract there, but I'll definitely not bother upload anything I think I can sell then now it's mentioned. Thanks Sandbag.

The upside is the contacts you can make there, especially if you're posting in fairly small/underused categories, and for me, it's the one remaining art/photo website that my company hasn't got around to blocking on the work internet (and polycount) so I'm always appreciative when people have DA accounts so I can browse the awesome WIP stuff on Polycount at lunchtimes. :)

The upload system is shite though, especially the ridiculous 'mature' button you have to check every time and can't cookie permanently off, which means if I upload 10 pictures of kittens I've got to check a box each time declaring they don't contain nudity, violence or profanity.

And don't bother trying to post complaints/suggestions on forums as you'll just get some whiny 15-yearold DA fanboy bitch that you've only got 10k pageviews so you don't know shit, and should just suck more satan cock and be happy with what you've got.

Oh yeah, and you're fucked if you want to download anything, I don't think even when I was a paid member there was an easy way to download the files all at once, only by editing the actual 'deviation' to allow download , meaning anyone can gank the fullsize/non-watermark version while you're trying to do it yourself.

I vote for Polycount image hosting for a reasonable monthly rate. :D

Eh, it's a pretty shitty community, and I truly do despise the website. If I had a less idiotic place to put my stuff (Polycount excluded, i want more of an archive like thing, similar to devart but..not shitty)
    Any suggestions?

While there are some great artists there and a good range of free stock photographers, don't expect much attention unless you specialize in depicting gay NarutoxTwilightxFurries erotica or the pretentious photography of SuicideGirls rejects. I wouldn't expect to grow much artistically from DA.

    Although there is nudity.

LOL Rooster, might have a look at Chub too then. Really what I should do is just use my own damn webspace, but maybe I'm too supremely lazy to figure out my own URLS for images, that or I'm paranoid the awesomeness of my kitten pictures will max out my months bandwidth in day. :poly117:

I have a deviantart http://sircula.deviantart.com that I started way back when I had just left high school its fun to look through it and see all my old crappy drawings hehe. I dont get involved in the community there, mostly just post art and look at good art Im watching quite alot of good 3D artists on there so its almost like an rss feed.

So basically the main problem with DeviantArt it is it has lots of people on it.

It does have lots of porn masquerading as art on it though. Women begging for attention etc, lots of ego boosting for everyone in general.

Better than the alternative though, some british site with only, sarcasm, cynicism and jealousy in the comments. Maybe thats an idea.

not really I think there are just alot of people of a particular variety eg 14-18 year olds obsessed with anime,manga,furries,poser3d,emo art etc. These people encourage thier own community alot making it almost seem like everything else on deviantart(professional art of all kinds) is very much on the fringe of that other community.

There's a pretty good group of Apophysis users on dA, plus the tutorials and scripts for it. It's where I lump all of my own work, just for fun. If you're just randomly browsing, there's a whole load of junk to wade through, but if you're aiming for a niche, there is some nice stuff.

Just for fun, some linkage: http://elhrrah.deviantart.com/

I have a gallery there, (soullancehal.deviantart.com) too but mostly because I dont really need a portfolio but wanted some sort of gallery.

I agree with the others. There is so much....well... eye-unfriendly stuff over there it's hard to find anything good.

That doesnt mean that there isn't there's quite awesome stuff, too.

e:// cghub as an alternative sounds way more convinicing though :O
