JoeCyriac polycounter lvl 16
Hello! I'm Joe, modeler and texture artist. I recently moved to Toronto and I'm pretty stoked to attend life drawing here. Figured this'd be a good place to post drawings and WIP 3D projects. C&C is welcome.

Gestures are 2 minutes, studies are half hour poses.

An asset that's part of a larger scene. 2 days work so far. Still WIP. All textures handpainted. Except for the spatter. :)

Added a table, more textures. Trying to keep everything handpainted.

    Great that you're doing studies.

That knight sure looks promising, specially when looking at the whole figure. Will you finish all of him? My only concern right now though is the resolution of the symbol on the chest. After his face, that symbol is the next thing my eyes are drawn to so it needs to be a lot crisper. I like the bluish tones you got going on him as well. With the symbol it gives the impression that he comes from a sea town.

    Callesw: Thanks!
AimBiZ: Thanks for the observations! I'm just doing the bust for now, it was more of a study than a finished character. Yeah, the symbol was an afterthought and it shows, not enough texture rez there.

    Here's a turntable of him:

A couple of screenshots of a WIP environment: A Thief-GameofThrones mashup: Still a lot more to do here, several props and two characters.

This sir is badass. Do you mind if we could get a glimpse of your textures? They are gorgeous on this piece. All of ur pieces in general are as a matter of fact :) Great Job!

I agree with Add3r! Love the books and table. Great handpainted style!

Darkleopard, Add3r: Thanks gents, I'll make a breakdown for texturing one of these assets. Noting extraordinary really, mostly painting, some overlays if necessary and grime and scratches. In the meantime, here are a couple of props added to the scene. I'll probably change the table texture, I don't think it's fitting the rest of the scene.

I like the table texture, but maybe some more variation in the color will really make it pop and give that true wood, weathered look. Even when you stain wood with the darkest of stains, unless you do a ton of coats (This is coming from a lot of personal experience with woodworking), there will still be very noticeable variations of color where the grains and age lines are. Right now you have a dark red stained look on the wood, and its border line plastic-y looking. Don't get me wrong, I love it how it is now and it really fits the style and theme throughout the scene, but if you were to change anything, I would say the wood just needs some slight color variation and more of a brown tone to it to make the reddish leather pop off the table on the books, etc.

Good job man, I like the weapons btw, if you can pose them nicely, they will be pretty sweet. Maybe have the dagger stabbed into the table at like an angle? thatd be cool, itd add to the story of the scene.

Add3r : You're dead on, mate. I' m redoing the table textures, as they're a bit too stylised for the scene. I'd like it to be a bit more realistic. I'll have a couple more weapons with the new textures in about a day or so for you to check out. Hopefully, they'll look better.

WOrking on a texture breakdown too. Thanks for the crits, keep them coming. :)

That enviro is coming along quite nicely. Will we see a full interior (walls and stuff) in the future? :)
Second Add3r about the wood. Age lines would really do a lot. I suppose the small table is only half way through as the planks are floating? Will there be a reason for having those nails at the ends? Just doesn't seem logical to have them that far out.

AimBiZ: Yep, the plan is to make a full room, with two characters in UDK. Let's see :) Does the table look better now? I've added more detail to the texture as well as supporting planks. Also added more weapons.

FullSynch: Haha, it's all about misdirection, man.

Took a break and started on the character for the set.

    Ramsay_01.jpg

Then took a break from him and started worked on this girl, based on a Jason Chan concept. Just a basic rough sculpt so far.

Great Sketchbook mate, i love your style. Gerold is my favourite, but his cheeks are a bit less disctinctive in the low poly. Looking forward to see the finished room!

Nice knight model! I'm doing one quite similar but she is a girl. I wonder what program did you use for modeling. Maya or something more organic like Zbrush? I'm kind of desperate when modeling from Maya because it's sloooow, vert by vert, you know.

Zelzaan: Thanks! Really like your paintings. :)
mariomanzanares: The Knight's modelled in XSI, sculpted in ZBrush. I tend to sculpt as much as I can and retopologise later. Yeah, it can get a bit tedious.

I tend to make illustrations and comics to take a break from the 3D stuff so I figured I'd post a couple I did recently. The first one was a gift for a friend. The second was more of a plea.

AimBiz: Reworked the face, hope he's looking better. (The textured version below is the old face)

silver_hoodlum: Nothing fancy there mate, normal maps from ZBrush and more details added in NDo2.

Face is looking better and the armor is turning out sweet although for the moment is a bit flat. I suggest to put in subtle shade and/or highlight gradients to accentuate the forms of the armor pieces.

The knight turned out pretty sweet, although he still looks a bit flat in the shots but it's due to the lighting. It's very even over the piece and seem to only have one source + some ambient. Make the fill light weaker and throw in a back/rim light and it would push the forms a lot more I think.

As for the new girl, you're very good with modelling armor but need to practice your faces. For crits on that; her lips look pasted on. They sides should blend in with the face more. How does she look without the lipstick?
Also the nostrils are connecting with the face a bit strangely so check that up.
Her palms looks quite thick as well I just noticed.

Stuff's going in the right direction though. Are these armored characters related to each other?

AimBiz: Thanks for the crits, much appreciated. I'll work on the face. The characters aren't really related, just wanted to work on a female for a change. Next up is the ArenaNet internship test.

Hey that one turned out really good, although you should do something about the fur. It doesn't make sense intersecting through the cloak the way it does right now. I'd suggest having it coming out of the top like a collar of some sort.
