I have been looking for a good pine tree for some time and the paint affects versions weren't really all that great. So I finally got fed up enough to just make my own.
This is the first real tree I have ever modeled. I have designed it so the branches and limbs can easily be moved around so as to have different variants.
It is based off a lodgepole pine. The right tree has poly branches mixed in for a poly count of around 10,000 the left tree does not have said branches and has a count of about 400.
I am still learning how to appropriately use alphas vs transparency layers and so their are things I still need to tweek but I thought I would show the results thus far.

I was working on a project awhile ago that involved pine trees. Got some good advice.
Here's the thread, hope it's helpful http://www.polycount.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92263&highlight=tree+fortress
Anyway I got the shadows casting like they should. I put a bump on everything. don't think it looks as good as normals but saves on file production. and played around a bit.
The left one I doubled the number of limbs. Middle I kept roughly the same as last post, and the last I noticeably to out a chuck of the bottom.
This is a quick render not great resolution just wanted to show changes to shape.
