Animated avatars not working

So I just tried to switch my avatar, and it told me

Am I doing something wrong? I'm 100% sure that animated avatars are possible, because I've seen them before. For example, here and here.

I also can't see my own avatar, just comes up as the standard greentooth, even though I can see it on my profile. What gives?

You haven't changed your Avatar. You've only changed your profile picture.

Thanks for that, Del - I didn't notice there were separate images for avatars and profile pictures. Apparently an avatar may be animated but a profile pic may not.

nah, its an easy mistake to make really
