Hi,
I'm pretty new to UDK and I've only imported static meshes/textures and saved those. Now I tried creating a simple map to test my meshes but I can't save my map.
Here are the steps:
1. made a simple map and saved: works
2. dragged a static mesh and saved: error message
3. deleted the static mesh and saved: works
Here are the packages and the error:

If I somehow I saved my static mesh as part of another level (If I understand what you mean) how can I get my static mesh to be saved in the package it is.... ?
I did use my static meshes in the levels that comes with udk before starting my own level (map) just to test them out.
...any idea?
