I am going to be starting my new portfolio soon, and i was just curious about how you guys go about finding concepts or real objects that you want to model?
If I don't like what I see then I'll chose the best of the Bulk and push "Similar" button which usually finds something better, sometimes by the same artist.
or browse around cghub everything there is amazing
When I need random sci-fi machinery, I have been known to go into the garage and start stacking power tools on each other.
Car engine parts, photos of the insides of old power plants, and similar stuff can get you some very cool shapes and volumes to iterate on, very quickly.
You could just ask around too. I'm sure if you posted a thread on ConceptArt.org or even here asking for someone to design an object for you, they'd be happy to. And in return, they would get their name more public.
