Max 2012 symmetry modifier weirdness

So for some reason every time I put a symmetry modifier on something, save, then reload my file, the symmetrical half of the model will have ... deleted itself? The whole half of my character that was being mirrored will just be gone, even though the modifier is still there. The bounding box too seems to say that the model has been cut in half. Flipping the mirror and changing the axis do nothing. Moving the mirror just cuts the object at new exciting locations. If I collapse the modifier, the polys will be gone forever. If I delete the modifier however, my model will still be in tact, and I can reapply a new symmetry; which will then work correctly..... Until I load the file again. This is driving me insane! Has anyone experienced anything like this?
