Hey Polycounters!
So, I've posted a couple WIPs here (see
here and
here )but have a bad habit of not updating threads or showing finished projects. Such is the curse of working full time! Either way, I'm hoping to make a habit of posting stuff semi-regularly and not clogging up the forums with unfinished work. To be honest, I have never had much confidence in my work, so I'm rather terrified of posting. This thread is hopefully a way of overcoming that a bit.
About myself, I'm a 24 year old designer/instructor at the Adidas HQ for the U.S. I wear a lot of hats here. I develop tools for designers, work as a project manager at times, model and texture apparel and footwear for concepts that are 3-4 years from release, and teach designers new techniques/tools. My real passion, though, is hard surface modeling and games in general. I really hope to break into the industry but I'm worried my skills aren't quite where they should be. As I post work, I'm hoping to get crits and advice to help me get there. Any assistance is much appreciated!
Down to brass tacks, this is my current wip. I'm modeling the Con Am 27 shuttle from the 80's classic Outland. I'm a huge scifi buff, and I dig the bulky functional design. My main goal is to just do a high poly model to push my skills. After this, I want to touch up some old work and focus on actual game assets.
If you don't know what Outland is, I made this handy description
here
Here's the original model from the movie. One of the builders did the Nostromo from Alien as well. Gotta respect the old school, and you can certainly see the similarities.
Here's my progress thus far. It's taken me 2 or 2 1/2 weeks to get here.
And this a random mix of wip shots I made during that time.
Thanks for checking this out! I look forward to posting more projects and getting involved with such a crazy good community.

I havent seen this movie and am looking for it RIGHT NOW!!
Also i read the poster as Outload....and then laughed.
I'll have some updates soon. Just finished working 186 hours in 2 1/2 weeks for our crunch time at work, so my head is still spinning. My goal is to rough in and refine the bits and bobs in those side compartments/cavities. After that, I wanna move on to the top of the ship. There's a lot of details I'm missing on the sides and front but finishing up the top will give me better sense of form.
@Wester Thanks so much dude! You're way too kind. haha. Definitely check out the movie, as it's killer. As for 70s and 80s designs, I'm head over heels for em right now. At work, most of our footwear designs are super sleek and organic, so it's nice to come home and work on something that tosses away a lot of those design "rules" and focus on pure function. It's butt ugly, but that makes it awesome!
@jmiles I'll see if I can snag some wires tonight. A lot of this is super dense, so that may make it a bit hard to read. Just a heads up
@l.croxton There's much better work on this site mate! I do appreciate it though
@Callesw Glad to meet someone else who digs that style
Here's some wires form earlier in the project. Like I said, they may be a bit hard to read, but the geo is pretty simple for the most part.
Here's a couple renders. Front one shows off the "gorilla" silhouette.
I'll post more progress soon. Cracking on the radar dish.
Need to paint out these seams at some point
I'm currently working as the only 3d concept designer at Adidas globally, but the desire to get into games has been growing more and more. At this point, I'm hoping to find work before year's end or early next year; so I'm trying to work on as much portfolio stuff as I can. Here are a bunch of wip projects
robot dog
the concept art i found for it
Personal weapon design project. Hoping to flesh this out, but feeling pretty happy with the function
Blaisoid's concept
hi poly
Textured lo poly (hand painted)
Hi poly sculpt
low poly bake

Take a look at this great example by Millenia - http://www.millenia3d.net/img/m4hp.jpg
His edge's are "softer", but in the end the bake will turn out amazing. Try this approach out next time you do some HP.
As for the shuttle, texturing it and getting it in engine is a pretty huge project, so I'm holding off. The gun is gonna happen soon. I work fulltime as a designer at Adidas, so I'm low on time. Trying to stay up late and gett all this done!
Like is it a gun or what???
Great job on this stuff btw, I saw your flying boat on another thread and it was an item I'd thought of modeling not too long ago, it was nice seeing yours you did a pretty good job with it!
